Lugia Lundis, Week Two
June 29th, 2015

Dogasu @ 23:57 JST -- The Mewtwo Strikes Back two-disc soundtrack set was – and still is – a pretty amazing set.  Disc One had the entirety of the Birth of Mewtwo radio drama while Disc Two had music from the main feature Mewtwo Strikes Back.  There were two vocal songs (the opening and ending) and 23 background music tracks that clocked in at around 42 minutes.  There are a few pieces of music missing, sure, and poor Pikachu’s Summer Vacation gets absolutely no love here but for the most part it’s a solid release.

I wish I could say the same about the Revelation Lugia soundtrack.  For this week’s Lugia Lundis update I take a look at the CD soundtrack for the second movie and try to figure out what the hell was going on there.

Revelation Lugia Soundtrack

What’s with all the vocal songs?  Why is more than half the music from the movie not on the soundtrack?  What’s with the pitiful 33 minute runtime?  I don’t actually have the answers to any of those questions but I do throw out a few ideas and wonder about the rationale behind releasing such a ridiculous CD especially after the precedent set by its predecessor.

I’ve also typed up the lyrics to the songs from the movie and have added them to the Lyrics Section:

toi et moi
Ware wa Collector
toi et moi
I Am a Collector
Hateshinai Sekai
Minna ga Ita Kara
The Endless World
Because Everyone Was There

Finally, I’ve created a page for the Soundtracks to the second movie.

Soundtracks

Next week I do the same thing I did with Mewtwo Strikes Back and take a look at how Revelation Lugia was being promoted back in 1999.  I only have two of the CoroCoro Comics issues from that time (the July and August 1999 issues) but they're both so jam-packed with information that it should be plenty.

CD Guide Update
June 28th, 2015

Dogasu @ 12:08 JST -- As I was looking at the various CD releases for tomorrow's Lugia Lundis update I thought I'd also take a look at the CDs coming out this year to promote Pokémon the movie XY "The Archdjinn of the Rings, Hoopa" and "Pikachu and the Pokemon Band."

Tweedia
Tweedia

First up is Tweedia, the ending theme to the main feature The Archdjinn of the Rings, Hoopa.  The CD will be released in two versions, one with a DVD and one without, on July 15th.  The version with the DVD (left) retails for 1700 yen while the version without (right) goes for 1260 yen.

Gao-Gao All-Stars
Gao-Gao All-Stars
Gao-Gao All-Stars

Also being released on July 15th is the CD single for Gao Gao All-Stars, the current ending theme to the Pocket Monsters XY TV series that's also going to be used as the ending theme to Pikachu and the Pokemon Band.  THis one's being released in three versions - a special Pokemon version (left, 1800 yen), a version that comes with a DVD (center, 1700 yen), and a regular version with just the CD (right, 1200 yen).  The DVD included in the Pokemon version includes the music video for Gao Gao All-Stars as well as a creditless version of the current ending theme while the DVD included in the other version is just some concert the girls did in Shibuya earlier this year.

There's also a CD release for the movie's background music that's coming out July 29th.  There will be two versions of that one - one with a DVD that probably just includes the trailers for the movie and one without.  Neither the track listing nor the CD cover art have been revealed yet.

Pokémon the movie XY "The Archdjinn of the Rings, Hoopa" and "Pikachu and the Pokemon Band" hits Japanese theaters on July 18th, 2015.  It is the second Pocket Monsters XY movie and the 18th film in the franchise overall.

Lugia Lundis, Week One
June 22nd, 2015

Dogasu @ 23:47 JST -- I’ve been doing this thing called “Mewtwo Mondays” for weeks where I’d update the site with something related to Mewtwo Strikes Back every Monday.  There’s an insane amount of content related to the movie and I could honestly keep doing these “Mewtwo Mondays” for at least another month or so but today I’m going to step away from that first movie and turn my attention to the second movie, Revelation Lugia.  Today, I start “Lugia Lundis.”

Revelation Lugia

(Lundi, for those of you wondering, is the French word for “Monday” and enables me to have the same alliteration scheme I had with “Mewtwo Mondays.”  Not sure what I’ll do when I get to the Entei movie)

For my first Lugia Lundis update I’m revamping the page for the movie over in the Movie & TV Specials Guide.  The older version of the page was pretty ugly and had some wrong information on it so I’ve cleaned it up and made it conform to the standards of the newer movie pages.  I’ve also added a bunch of information from the gold mine that is Shudou Takeshi’s blog about the making of the film.

I’ve also added a page for the home video releases of the movie.

Next week I’m going to take a look at the movie's soundtrack.  The CD release of the soundtrack to this movie is unique in that it’s missing like half the background music from the movie and has a bunch of character image songs in their place.  Why is this the only movie soundtrack to feature songs sung by the movie’s characters?  Why is the percentage of background music that’s on this CD so much lower than what was on the Mewtwo Strikes Back CD?  Why didn’t Ichimura Masachika get to sing a song in-character as Mewtwo for the soundtrack to the first movie?  I don’t actually know the answers to any of those questions and have no idea if I’ll even be able to find out but I’ll certainly do my best!

"Appear, the Small Djinn Hoopa" Plot Synopsis
June 20th, 2015

Dogasu @ 17:06 JST -- And now here's a plot synopsis for the direct-to-DVD Hoopa special that was made available yesterday Appear, the Small Djinn Hoopa.

Appear, the Small Djinn Hoopa!

Enjoy!

Pokémon the movie XY "The Archdjinn of the Rings, Hoopa" and "Pikachu and the Pokemon Band" hits Japanese theaters on July 18th, 2015.  It is the second Pocket Monsters XY movie and the 18th film in the franchise overall.

"Appear, the Small Djinn Hoopa"
June 19th, 2015

Dogasu @ 23:54 JST -- A few months ago it was announced that there would be a new Hoopa short coming out in June but that it would only be made available on DVD for those who pre-ordered their movie tickets from Seven-Eleven stores here in Japan.  Well that's exactly what I did and today I finally got said DVD in my hands.

Appear, the Small Djinn Hoopa

I've filled out the page for the special with a bunch of information about Appear, the Small Djinn Hoopa that hadn't been made available before now.  There are still a number of things I want to do - a detailed plot synopsis, for one - but I at least wanted to get something up before I head off to bed tonight.  I'll definitely be posting more at some point tomorrow.

Here's a quick review, though; it's pretty entertaining, I guess.  It's exactly as pointless as I thought it'd be and missing out on it won't ruin the movie at all which I guess is kind of good because I can totally see TPCI skipping this one for a number of reasons.  The basic story is that Balza and Mary, along with a bunch of their friends, accidentally break an Arceus statue and so they have to scramble around trying to fix it.  There's other stuff here too but I'll get into that in a later update.

The only real downside to this is that Kugimiya Rie's Hoopa voice started to grate on my nerves by the end of the short.  Up until now all we really had were the Orchid-Hakase lectures at the end of each episode of XY and those Hoopa's Great "Appear~!" Operation!! shorts (which, surprise, they're on this DVD too!) but those were only like a minute long each.  Here we get a full 21 minutes of Hoopa and while it never says more than a few words at a time hearing these little bursts every minute or so got really tiring.  I hope the main feature isn't as aggravating to watch.

And now let's look at a movie that isn't nearly two decades old
June 18th, 2015

Dogasu @ 08:20 JST -- The July 2015 issue of CoroCoro Comics was released on Monday and included the third chapter of Kamimura Gin's manga adaptation of The Archdjinn of the Rings, Hoopa.  I've written up the usual summary of the comparatively short 31-page chapter.

Chapter Three

With this we basically know the plot of the movie!  What do you think?  Is this movie playing out pretty much the way you expected?

A graphic novel collection will be released on July 18th, 2015, the same day the movie hits theaters.

Mewtwo Mondays, Week Thirteen
June 15th, 2015

Dogasu @ 23:16 JST -- For the final week of Mewtwo Mondays I've got a bunch of random behind-the-scenes updates!  I wasn't able to do as much as I had wanted but I still think I've got a decent amount of material that most of you have never seen before.

CoroCoro December 1997
CoroCoro April 1998
CoroCoro July 1998
CoroCoro August 1998

First up is a breakdown of the coverage that CoroCoro Comics was doing at the time.  How was the magazine promoting the movie?  When did certain details about the film come out?  What was being hyped up the most?

Behind the Scenes

Next up is a miscellaneous "behind the scenes" look at the movie that includes character model sheets and stories from the cast and crew.  There's a ton more I could have added to this section but I unfortunately wasn't able to get to it all in time.  Maybe next time!

Finally I've added some trivia about the movie from Shudou Takeshi's excellent blog over on the main Mewtwo Strikes Back page.  Shudou Takeshi is a fascinating man but he kind of had the tendency to ramble on quite a bit so I wasn't able to get through everything.  Still, there are some neat nuggets in there I think you'll enjoy.

And that's the end of Mewtwo Mondays!  I could seriously do this for another few weeks but I think it's about time I moved on to the second movie.  So be sure to come back here next week for the start of Lugia Lundis!

The Archdjinn of the Rings, Hoopa / Pikachu and the Pokemon Band Press Reading
June 9th, 2015

Dogasu @ 23:38 JST -- Yesterday, June 8th, a press reading for this year's movie Pokémon the movie XY "The Archdjinn of the Rings, Hoopa" and "Pikachu and the Pokemon Band" was held here in Tokyo.  The special guest actors all gather and record a few lines for the movie in what is basically one big PR show.  And it also seems like the takes they record during this event will be used in the actual film?  Anyway, the official website posted a report of yesterday's recording and so I went and translated it for you guys.

Pretty much all the scene descriptions / line readings match up with what's going on in the manga adaptation of the movie that's currently running in CoroCoro Comics so I think it's safe to say that the manga's an accurate representation of what's going on in the movie.

Mewtwo Mondays, Week Twelve
June 8th, 2015

Dogasu @ 23:49 JST -- Mewtwo Strikes Back aired alongside a short film called Pikachu's Summer Vacation.  Today I redo my comparison from...gosh, 2002?...of Pikachu's Summer Vacation.

"Pikachu's Summer Vacation"

It's pretty terrible!  Not Mewtwo Strikes Back terrible, of course, but it gets pretty close at parts.

Next week I'll be wrapping up my coverage of Mewtwo Strikes Back by looking at various ways the movie was promoted.  What did the CoroCoro Comics coverage look like at that time?  What kind of promotions were going on to promote the movie?  What did the trailers look like?  I'll also be looking at the guide books and other behind-the-scenes stuff to see what nuggets of information they contain.

The week after that "Mewtwo Mondays" will become "Lugia Lundis."  See you then!

Miscellaneous "The Archdjinn of the Rings, Hoopa" and "Pikachu and the Pokemon Band"  Updates
June 6th, 2015

Dogasu @ 17:25 JST -- Today I'm playing catch up with some of the updates the official website for Pokémon the movie XY "The Archdjinn of the Rings, Hoopa" and "Pikachu and the Pokemon Band" has made over the past few weeks.

For starters, I've translated last week's and this week's entry to the Location Scouting Report, which cover the rest of the team's second day in Dubai:

Location Scouting 7
Location Scouting 8
Report 7: "Souks! Souks! Souks!"
Report 8: "Worship and Sunsets"

I've also added all the model sheets from the Appear! Movie Information page as well as the images posted on the "Today's Hoopa" page:

Today's Hoopa
Appear! Movie Information
Today's Hoopa

It's kind of weird to think that this movie is coming out next month.  There's sure to be a ton of news in the next few weeks and I'm going to do my best to keep on top of everything.

Mewtwo Mondays, Week Eleven
June 1st, 2015

Dogasu @ 22:42 JST -- Ono Toshihiro did a manga adaptation of Mewtwo Strikes Back for the July 1998 issue of CoroCoro Comics.  The 52-page story was never put into any graphic novel collection and was never translated into English meaning most fans have never gotten a chance to read.  Well a couple of months ago I actually managed to find a copy of the CoroCoro Comics issue with the movie adaptation in it and so for this week's update I'm taking a detailed look at it:

Mewtwo Strikes Back

I've got a detailed synopsis of the manga adaptation here.  The manga is very, very different from the final movie and is a fantastic take on the story that I think a lot of you will really enjoy.  Accordingly, I've also added a page detailing the differences between the movie and the manga adaptation.  I've also written up a bio on Ono Toshihiro.

Next week's update will be a redo of my comparison for "Pikachu's Summer Vacation," the Pikachu short that accompanied Mewtwo Strikes Back in theaters.  Yeah, I know, it's not really Mewtwo related but it feels weird to just skip over it, right?  I'll also try to post updates about some of the more recent stuff throughout the week as well.
