Let's take a look at the competition
June 29th, 2014

Dogasu @ 22:04 JST -- This year's movie The Cocoon of Destruction and Diancie is coming out July 19th, 2014.  Every year I like to scope out the competition and see what else is being released that day and so here's what I've come up for this year:
There are actually fourteen other movies coming out that day but they're all these arty independent films that aren't going to make as much money in their first weekend as this year's Pocket Monsters movie will.

Maleficent

Maleficent opens on July 5th and so The Cocoon of Destruction and Diancie might end up debuting in second place if Angelina Jolie's newest film is still doing well by the time the 19th rolls around.  Which, knowing how much Japan loves both Disney and Angelina Jolie, is a very strong possibility.  So maybe the weekend box office will be Maleficent, then Pocket Monsters, and then the Studio Ghibli movie?

In other news, Amazon Japan posted the track listing for Pokemon the Movie XY "The Cocoon of Destruction and Diancie" & "Pikachu, What is This the Key To?" Music Collection!  The CD Guide's been updated accordingly.

Carnet vs. Ganpi

A few things worth mentioning:
  • The track listings for the movie soundtracks tend to be listed in the order they happen in the movie and so you can pretty much use this soundtrack as a general outline for the film's plot.  Spoilers!
  • You can also see that the plot outline offered by the soundtrack more or less matches up with what the manga adaptation showed us.
  • Track 7, "Carnet vs. Ganpi," is almost certainly taking place during the obligatory "World of Pokemon" segment at the beginning of the movie.  I doubt either one of them will have any speaking roles.
  • Look, information about the Pikachu short!  Looks like it'll have a bunch of Chigaurus in it?  And the Rocket pokemon get their own theme?  And the order that the legendary pokemon debut will be Victini, then Manaphy, then Jiraachi, and finally Darkrai?
Oh and speaking of CDs J Dee'Z is finally releasing a CD featuring the two ending themes they've done for Pocket Monsters XY so far.  The two-disc set - one CD, one DVD - is coming out July 23rd, 2014.  The CD Guide's been updated with this information as well.

J Dee'Z

I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel for this big project I've been working on lately.  If all goes well maybe it'll be ready before next weekend's up?

"The Cocoon of Destruction and Diancie" Update #38013
June 22nd, 2014

Dogasu @ 15:50 JST -- Another Sunday, another look at what's been revealed about the first Pocket Monsters XY movie over the past week.

So the big announcement this week is that there will be a new TV special starring Diancie that will air July 17th, 2014, two days before The Cocoon of Destruction and Diancie hits theaters.  The special, Princess Diancie and the Ore Kingdom, takes place before the events of this year's movie similar to how Myuutwo - The Prologue to Its Awakening took place before the events of The Extreme Speed Genosect and the Awakening of Myuutwo.  The Myuutwo special didn't do jack squat for the movie it was promoting but hopefully the Diancie special will actually be worth watching?  I've created a page with everything we know about the special here.

Princess Diancie and the Ore Kingdom

On the voice actor side of things, Uchida Atsuto, a player for Japan's Samurai Blue soccer team, will be playing a role in this summer's movie.  While these Pocket Monsters movies always have celebrities come in to record some lines Mr. Uchida is the first professional athlete to do any sort of voice work in one of these movies.  He'll be playing a bellboy named Uschi, a character who seems to have been made up for the sole purpose of giving Mr. Uchida someone to voice.  The Character Bios page has been updated with information about Uschi and the Special Guest Voice Actors page has been updated with a quote Mr. Uchida gave about working on Pokemon.

Uchida Atsuto

Sticking with sound for a bit, sound director for the franchise Mima Masafumi tweeted a few pictures showing us how work on the movies are going:

Pikachu Short

"Pikachu and its friends run amock on the big screen!?  Cleffey is cute?  Make sure you see it in theaters!  Opening day is coming up soon!!"

ピカチュウ達が、スクリーンの中で暴れ回る?!クレッフィが可愛い🎵是非、劇場で!もうすぐ公開!!

The front of the script, by the way, tells us that the Pikachu short was written by Tomioka Atsuhiro (冨岡淳広).

Finished!

"The mixing work on this year's Pokemon movie "Pikachu, What is This the Key To?" is now finished~!  Next, we'll head straight into the main feature!  My life as a hermit starts now~"

ポケモンの今年の映画「ピカチュウ これなんのカギ?」のミックス作業、終了〜♪引き続き、長編へ突入!モグラ生活が始まった〜

This tweet was posted on Friday, June 20th.

Finally, I've added a translation of the final (for real this time!) Location Scouting Report.

Director Yuyama Kunihiko

We've got less than a month to go before the movie hits theaters!

"The Flare-Dan is not the enemy of the month!" would honestly be a refreshing twist at this point
June 21st, 2014

Dogasu @ 18:28 JST -- The August 2014 issue of CoroCoro Ichiban! went on sale today and so I've typed up a summary of the new chapter of Pocket Monsters Special that was inside.

CoroCoro Ichiban! August 2014

I also picked up the Mega V (Mega Volt) CD that went on sale this past week and have put up the lyrics to the full sized version (which are 99.9% identical to the lyrics for V (Volt), something they even admit in the liner notes that came with the CD) of the song in the Lyrics Guide.

Mega V (Mega Volt)

Finally, I've updated the List of TV Episodes with a couple of new Japanese episode titles.

It's bound to be better than Pokemon Ieru Ka Na? BW, at least

June 17th, 2014

Dogasu @ 22:53 JST -- Do you remember when the details of Scandal's CD release of The Early Morning Meteor Shower, the ending theme to The Cocoon of Destruction and Diancie, were announced late last month?  At the time we were told that the special "Pokemon Version" of the CD would have a special "Pokemon"-related song on it as a bonus but none of us knew what that was going to end up being.

Well, last week Sony Music Japan announced that the single will be a cover of Pokemon Ieru Ka Na?, a song many fans in the West know as "the Japanese PokéRap."  That's...OK, I guess?  *shrugs*  The CD will come with a B2 sized poster featuring Pikachu and Mega Diancie.

The Early Morning Meteor Shower

The CD will also come with an entry form for a chance to win a special limited edition The Cocoon of Destruction and Diancie Nintendo 3DS.  A picture of this 3DS has unfortunately not been made available yet but we do at least know that only ten of them will be given out.

Over on the other side of the Pacific, Amazon now has a listing for the first Pokémon BW Adventures in Unova DVD box set.

BW Adventures in Unova DVD Box Set

An episode count isn't given but the cover states that it'll contain nine hours' worth of footage spread across four discs.  That's the same as the third BW Rival Destinies set and so I'm guessing that this one is going to have 25 episodes on it as well.  Episode 26 of the season is the start of the Decolore Islands story arc and is when the season adds "and Beyond" to its title so it makes sense story arc wise as well.  The first Adventures in Unova DVD box set will be coming out September 23rd, 2014.

The DVD Guide has been updated accordingly.

"The Cocoon of Destruction and Diancie"
June 15th, 2014

Dogasu @ 22:23 JST -- The Cocoon of Destruction and Diancie's July 19th release date is just a few weeks away!  Let's get caught up to date, shall we?

For starters, I've added Mega Diancie to the Pokemon page for the movie.

Mega Diancie

I've updated the page on The Thieves and the Thousand Pokemon with information about the special present you can receive for taking your 3DS with you to the theater this summer.

Master Ball

Next up are pages dedicated to two events coming up this summer.  The first is a theme park attraction known as "Save the Princess of the Kingdom of Diamonds" that will ask park visitors to solve a number of riddles in order to save Diancie.  This seems to be quite similar to the
"Save the Amusement Park from the Extreme Speed Genosect!" attraction from last year.  The second page I've created today is dedicated to an art exhibit taking place in Roppongi Hills here in Tokyo called "Pokémon the movie XY Exhibit "Nice to meet Pikachu!"  The exhibit is being open to commemorate the release of the Diancie movie but is also supposed to have behind-the-scenes looks at all the other movies

Save the Princess of the Kingdom of Diamonds Pokemon the movie XY Exhibit

I won't be able to go to the amusement park one but the art exhibit is something I'll definitely make the effort to attend.  But man is July going to be a busy month.  The Cocoon of Destruction and Diancie / Pikachu, What is This the Key To? hits theaters, there's that planetarium show "Pocket Monsters XY The Space Debris" I want to check out, now I've got this art exhibit to go to...I'm not complaining or anything, I'm just wondering when I'm going to get the time to get any sleep next month.

The fifteenth and maybe final installment in Director Yuyama's Location Scouting report has been posted on the movie's official website and so, as always, I've translated it and added it to the Location Scouting page.

Location Scouting

Finally, I've added the cover of the Pokemon version of Scandal's The Early Morning Meteor Shower to the CD Guide.

The Early Morning Meteor Shower

I think that's enough for one update.  There are a few more small things here and there I want to add but for the most part my site's section on this movie is as up-to-date as it can be.  Let's see how long I can keep that up.

"The Cocoon of Destruction and Diancie" Manga, Part Two
June 14th, 2014

Dogasu @ 10:50 JST -- My plan for the day was to put up a summary for the manga adaptation of this year's movie that came out yesterday and then work on several of the big projects I've been meaning to do for the site.  But then the official website for The Cocoon of Destruction and Diancie had to go and dump all this info on us and so now I'll be spending the rest of the day working on that instead.

Anyway, here's my summary of the second chapter of the manga adaptation of The Cocoon of Destruction and Diancie

The Cocoon of Destruction and Diancie

A graphic novel collection has been announced for July 19th, 2014, the same day that the movie hits theaters.

Director Yuyama's Location Scouting Guide
June 11th, 2014

Dogasu @ 16:58 JST -- I've also updated the Video Games guide with information on the release dates for Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire as well as The Big Fray - Smash Brothers for Nintendo 3DS

Omega Ruby Alpha Sapphire

In movie news, I've translated the fourteenth entry in Director Yuyama's Location Scouting Guide, "To Flowerpot Island and the Forest."

Flowerpot Island

The second chapter of the manga adaptation of The Cocoon of Destruction and Diancie will be in Friday's issue of CoroCoro Comics.  I'll be posting a summary of that as soon as I can.

Sugimori Ken's Work - A 25 Year Portfolio from "Quinty" to "Jerry Boy" and "Pocket Monsters"
June 8th, 2014

Dogasu @ 17:28 JST -- About a week and a half ago a collection of work that Sugimori Ken's done for the past 25 years was released here in Japan.  The name of the book is Sugimori Ken's Work - A 25 Year Portfolio from "Quinty" to "Jerry Boy" and "Pocket Monsters" and today I present my review / overview of the book.

Sugimori Ken's Work

So what's in this thing anyway?  Is there any new information in there?  Is this book a must-have for Pocket Monsters fans?  Check out my review and see for youself!

I spent a long time working on this so if you guys have any feedback / questions then I'd love to hear them.

Pocket Monsters Special, Johto DVD News
June 1st, 2014

Dogasu @ 18:43 JST -- Here's the summary for the chapter of Pocket Monsters Special that was printed in the issue of Pokemon Fan that came out yesterday:

Pokemon Fan Issue 36

The next issue of Pokemon Fan is due out July 19th, 2014, the same day that The Cocoon of Destruction and Diancie hits theaters.

Speaking of the movie,
the soundtrack releases for The Cocoon of Destruction and Diancie and Pikachu, What is This the Key To? have been announced.  There will be two versions:  a regular version and a version that comes with a DVD containing trailers for the movie.  The soundtrack comes out July 30th, 2014.  The CD Guide has been updated accordingly.

Finally, in DVD news, VizMedia's official Facebook page responded to a fan inquiry made back on May 13th asking whether or not Pokémon Johto (it's safe to assume the question was referring to Pok
émon The Johto Journies, Pokémon Johto League Champions, and Pokémon Master Quest) will ever be re-released on DVD.  Here's what they said:

Fan:  "Will pokemon johto ever come out on dvd?"
Viz Media:  "Yes. We have a repackaged version for it in the works."
Fan:  "Early 2015?"
Viz Media:  "Possible."

Fan:  "Hopefully before my anime convention in september"
Viz Media:  "It will probably not be before September."

Fan:  "Poketastic! XD when will be out?"
Viz Media:  "We don't have a release date lined up just yet, but we will announce it here and on the various anime news sites when we can."

Pokémon The Johto Journies originally came out on DVD in the U.S. between 2001 to 2002 across thirteen releases.  All but the last two episodes of the season were released.  Pokémon Johto League Champions originally came out on DVD in the U.S. between December 2002 and February 2004 across seven discs.  These DVDs upped the episode count to about seven per disc which caused a noticeable dip in video quality but gave the customers more episodes for their money.  Finally, Pokémon Master Quest was released on October 26th, 2004 and February 15th, 2005.  This "season" (which is actually comprised of all of Season 5 and about a third of Season 6) was released exclusively in box sets, a first for the series.

These old DVDs have been out of print for over a decade and therefore demand absurdly high prices on the second hand market and so a re-release like this is very much needed.

Of course why they didn't re-release Johto back when HeartGold & SoulSilver were relevant is anyone's guess.

Today's update involved me translating a bunch of stuff
June 1st, 2014

Dogasu @ 00:32 JST -- I've got a random assortment of updates for you all today.

First up, in music news, I've added the lyrics to both Mega V (Mega Volt) and Peace Smile to the Lyrics Archive.  I feel the same way about Mega V (Mega Volt) as I did about V (Volt) (great song ruined by a terrible singer) and am mostly surprised that they're changing the opening theme this early in the series.  Peace Smile is worlds better than the previous ending theme and so I'm happy for the change.

Mega V (Mega Volt)
Peace Smile

The official site for the movie The Cocoon of Destruction and Diance has announced that Mega V (Mega Volt) will be used as the opening theme for the feature film and Peace Smile will be used as the ending theme for Pikachu, What is This the Key To?

Speaking of the movie, I've added my translation of the thirteenth installment in Director Yuyama's Location Scouting Guide.  In this week's episode the location scouting team finishes up at Niagra Falls before heading to the gourmet area of Stratford.

Director Yuyama's Location Scouting

The official Japanese Pokemon site has added some more information about The Thieves and the Thousand Pokemon, the free-to-download game that's coming out this Thursday.  I've added what I felt was important to the page dedicated to the game.

The Thieves and the Thousand Pokemon

Finally, I've added a note at the end of the "Snow Way Out!" comparison about the music video for Kaze to Issho ni that was shown in place of the usual Orchid-Hakase Pokemon Course segment.

"Snow Way Out!"

Also, quick programming note:  I got the Sugimori Ken art portfolio book this past week and have been slowly making my way through it.  I'll be posting a review of it in the future but in the meantime let me just say this; if you're only picking this book up for the Pokemon part of it then you'll be sorely disappointed.

Sugimori Ken's Illustration Collection

The overwhelming majority of the book is dedicated to Mr. Sugimori's other works - Quinty, Jerry Boy, etc. - and the Pocket Monsters portion mainly consists of the same stock artwork you can find on sites like Bulbapedia.  There are a few pieces of neat trivia here and there, but for the most part it's not the treasure trove that I think most fans expected.

Again, I'll post a more full review at a later date.  It's over 300 pages long, though, so please bear with me as I make my way through it.
