Adventure 14 - "Defeating Stoutland"

January 2011

Black's battle with Aloe continues as War goes up against Aloe's Muland.  Unfortunately, Black doesn't figure out that Muland's fourth move is Last Resort until it's too late.  His Wargle is defeated, leaving only Musha left.  Black's pokemon tries to use Hypnosis but fails, leaving it open to Muland's Take Down attack. After thinking about the battle up to that point, Black decides to have Musha use Zen Headbutt as a last resort.  The attack, combined with the recoil damage accumulated from Muland's repeated Take Down attacks, defeats Black's opponent and earns him the Basic Badge.  White meets up with Black at the Gym and tells him all about the plans to hold a Pokemon Musical in Raimon City.  Later that night, Aloe receives a phone call from her colleague Yakon.  He asks her to analyze a black stone holding an immense amount of energy that his Doryuuzu dug up earlier.  She agrees and leaves the Gym to go pick it up.  Unknown to the two of them, the Dark Triad is spying on their conversation.  They recognize the stone as the Dark Stone and make plans to steal it so they can harness the power of the legendary dragon pokemon Zekrom.

Notes about the English version
Unfortunately, I do not own the Japanese version of this chapter.

Adventure 15 - "The Mystery of the Missing Fossil"

January 2011 Adventure 15

As Black and White finish up in Shippou City, Kidachi announces that a bunch of his museum's treasures, including their "Dragon Pokemon Bones," have been stolen!  As Black leaves to go after the thieves, a man named Arti stops him with his Wheega and offers to help.  When the two of them step outside, they see the unbelievable:  the stolen skeleton is walking around on its own!  After Black calls on the people behind this to step forward, the three Plasma-Dan grunts from the Site of Dreams and Asura, one of their Seven Sages, appears.  Black tells them how he discovered the skeleton's location and deduces that either a Psychic or a Ghost type pokemon is manipulating the bones.  At that moment, Black figures out that the coffin hidden among the artifacts stolen from the museum is really a Deathkan!  Arti's Wheega defeats the pokemon, stopping the skeleton and prompting the Plasma-Dan members to retreat.  Later, Black tells Arti that he knows he's a Gym Leader and expresses his desire to battle him when he gets to Hiun City.  As Black and White leave Shippou City, Arti becomes troubled by the "hero" and "dragon" the Plasma-Dan mentioned as they were leaving...

Notes about the English version
You know how there will be small differences between the version of a chapter that's in the monthly magazines and the version that eventually gets printed in the graphic novels?  Well, I'm thinking Viz must have gotten the redone version of this chapter because Viz wouldn't have had any reason to remove / add any of the stuff here.

Page 27, Panel Three:  This isn't really an "edit," per se, but there's still something about this woman's name tag that I wanted to point out:

Shitan Loblolly

It's pretty much impossible to read, isn't it?  Here, let me blow it up for you.

Shitan Loblolly

This woman is called Shitan (シタン) in the Japanese version.  Viz did their homework on this one and found out that she's called Loblolly in the English version of the games and did their best to try and fit it into the tiny space that was there.  As you can see, though,

Also, while I'm on the subject; oh my god Loblolly is like the worst fucking name NOA could have given this poor woman.

Page 30, Panels One, Two, and Three:  The hexagons during Black's "Detective Time" are removed from the English version.

I'm assuming they were removed so we could actually see the footprints in the picture there?

Page 47, Panel Two:  Shaga and Kamitsure get redrawn.

Japanese English

This is the first time Shaga's appeared in this series, and I'm guessing that Yamamoto Satoshi hadn't realized that we never see Shaga's bottom lip yet.  As for Kamitsure's eyes and chin line...your guess is as good as mine.

Page 48, Panel Two:  A forest is added to the second panel.

Again, I'm sure Viz didn't actually do any of these changes themselves (why would they?) and that we'll see these same edits appear in the Japanese graphic novels whenever they come out.

Adventure 16 - "A Direct Attack and a Daunting Defense"

January 2011 Adventure 16

As Black and White make their way through the Yaguruma Forest, they get caught up in a strong wind.  They press forward anyway, eventually making their way across the Sky Arrow Bridge.  There, the trainers meet a janitor named Shinosuke who demands a double battle from Black.  His Yabukuron smells too bad for Poka to approach and his Chillachino can block Tula's electric attacks with its tail, making both of his pokemon seem untouchable.  As Shinosuke's pokemon unleash a volley of attacks, his Chillachino knocks Poka into a dumpster.  The Fire-type pokemon emerges with two plastic bottles in its nose, plugging it up and preventing Yabukuron's stench from getting to it!  Now fighting at 100%, Pokabu is able to defeat Yabukuron with a fire attack.  Next, Tula stops using electric attacks and begins relying on its other techniques to defeat the janitor's Chillachino.  When the battle is finished, Shinosuke tells the trainers that the whirlwind the two encountered was caused by the legendary pokemon Virizion.  He then reveals that he is the head of the Hiun City Battle Company and exchanges business cards with White.  The two trainers bid Shinosuke farewell, finish crossing the bridge, and make their way into Hiun City.

Notes about the English version

Page 57, Panel Six
I find it kind of funny that Janitor Geoff, a man clearly in the twilight of his life, would come out with a phrase like "This is just the way we roll."  The original Japanese line is sou konakute wa... (そうこなくては…), which basically means "this is the way we do this" only not as slang-y."

Page 58, Panel One:  Geoff introduces himself as "Janitor Geoff."  In the Japanese version, Shin'nousuke doesn't attach his job title to his name (わたしの名はシンノスケ!!).

Adventure 17 - "Lost in the Big City"

January 2011 Adventure 17

Black and Poka arrive in Hiun City.  Black is overwhelmed by the large crowds and decides to take refuge in the Game Freak headquarters.  Inside, he spots a young boy crying and assumes that he's lost.  Black goes up to the kid and tries to help him out, but the kid won't say a word.  Unable to pry any information from him, Black decides to find a staff member and have them deal with the lost child.  He leaves, asking his Pokabu to look after the boy.  As soon as Black is gone, the little boy turns into a Zorroa!  The pokemon shoves Pokabu's tail into its nostril before running toward an elevator, laughing.  Pokabu follows Zorroa onto the elevator but can't find it since it's transformed itself again.  When the elevator stops, Zorroa reverts back and starts to run around, knocking everything over in the room!  It heads for the staircase and begins to run down, so Pokabu follows.  After a few more attacks, Pokabu is finally able to hit it with one of its fire attacks.  Black returns just as Zorroa runs away, leaving the score between Pokabu and Zorroa unsettled for the time being.

Notes about the English version
This was the second chapter of the Black & White storyline ever released in Japan.  The chapter released in this volume as "Adventure 16" ("A Direct Attack and a Daunting Defense") came out in Japan on April 20th, 2011 while this chapter, "Adventure 17" ("Lost in the Big City"), came out more than half a year earlier on September 18th, 2010.  This chapter is probably the first time artist Yamamoto Satoshi had ever drawn Black, so the artwork being different is probably a result of his inexperience drawing the character.

Page 73, Panel One:  Viz identifies Black by name in the narration that starts off the chapter, but the Japanese version withholds this information from us.  Also, the text on the left side of the panel - "And their adventures begin!" - is actually in the Japanese version, but it makes more sense there because this was the first chapter Japanese audience got that featured Black.  In the English version, however, seeing "And their adventures begin!" in the final chapter of the series' fifth volume makes less sense.
