Adventure 18 - "Big City Battles"

August 2011

Black has arrived in Hiun City!  After participating in a photo shoot with White, Black is told that he's paid off half the cost of the camera equipment he destroyed back in Karakusa Town!  White then offers to sponsor Black on his journey as long as he continues to work for the BW Agency.  Just then, they both notice that Black's Pokabu seems like it's about to evolve.  White is worried that the pokemon evolving will be a problem for their productions and expresses her desire for it to stay the way it is.  Later, Black meets Arti at the Hiun City Gym.  Their three on three battle begins with Black's Wargle going up against Arti's Wheelga.  Arti's pokemon is able to get in a hit but is quickly taken out by Wargle's Air Slash.  Next, Arti calls on Ishizumai.  It uses Smack Down to ground Black's Flying-type and then watches as the poison it had received from Wheelga finishes it off.  Arti decides to switch over to his Hahakomori to face off against Black's Dentula.  Elsewhere, Bel and Cheren have split up to look for Black.  Suddenly, a member of the Plasma-Dan attacks her and steals her Hitomoshi!

Notes about the English version

Page 9, Panel One:
Viz erases the text that says Pokemon Massaaji (ポケモンマッサージ), or "Pokemon Massage," at the bottom of the poster.

Also, I'm kind of amused by the idea of these people hiring a professional agency to make a poster that contains textspeak.

Adventure 19 - "The Case of the Missing Pokémon"

September 2011

After a brief battle, Black's Dentula and Arti's Hahakomori knock each other out!  Arti calls out his Ishizumai again while Black hesitantly calls out his Pokabu.  After Ishizumai knocks Pokabu against the wall with a Smack Down attack, Black's pokemon begins to glow.  Suddenly, Pokabu evolves into Charbu!  It knocks the rock that had been thrown at it toward Ishizumai, causing it to faint!  Suddenly, Arti's Gym Leader friend Iris enters the building with Bel!  After deducing that she was assaulted so her pokemon could be stolen, Black asks his Charbu to sniff out Bel's attackers.  Eventually, everyone is led into a building across the street from the gym.  After taking care of the Morobareru inside, Black and the others come face to face with Sumura, one of the Seven Priests of the Plasma-Dan.  Before making his escape, he tells his pursuers that the group will revive the Black Flash of Lightning to unite the people of the Isshu region.  With the Plasma-Dan now gone, Black and the others help return the stolen pokemon back to their owners.  Later, when going over his revised shooting schedule with White, Black reveals that he's changed Poka's nickname to "Char."

Notes about the English version

Page 54, Panel Three:  The days of the week are omitted from the schedule, most likely due to space restraints.

The ... are meant to take place on Tuesday,

Page 55, Panel Four:  Black's Charbu is nicknamed Chaa (チャー), or "Char" in the Japanese version.  Viz changes this nickname to "Nite."

Adventure 20 - "At Liberty on Liberty Garden"

October 2011

Black calls Araragi-Hakase to update her on his adventure.  During this conversation, the professor asks Black to board a ship to Liberty Island to investigate a pokemon named Victini.  When Black and White arrive on the island, they notice that nobody's around.  Black uses Musha to clear his mind and focuses on a lighthouse he kept seeing in all the guidebooks.  He has a feeling that Victini is there, so he has War use Aerial Ace on the building.  When the smoke clears, three members of the Plasma-Dan and their Gothilselle appear!  One grunt tells Black that 200 years ago, a millionaire had bought the island and hidden Victini below the lighthouse to keep it from danger.  When he passed away, people became able to enter and exit the island as they pleased.  Therefore, the grunt argues, it's up to them to protect Victini by keeping it there, even if it's against the pokemon's will!  Wargle is ordered to stop Gothilselle and, with the help of Victini's power, is able to defeat the Plasma-Dan's pokemon.  After the grunts retreat, Black informs Araragi-Hakase that Victini disappeared after that.  The professor thanks Black and asks him to contact her again if he needs anything.

Notes about the English version

Page 62, Panel Two:  Viz takes the translation for Black's vow to win the Pokemon League that was used in Adventure 9 (
"I'm going to the Pokémon League!  And I'm gonna win!!!  I am so totally absolutely gonna win that tournament!!!") and tweaks it ever so slightly to "I'm going to the Pokémon League!  And I am so totally absolutely gonna win that tournament!!!"  Consistency!

Page 64, Panel Seven:  Toudai (灯台), or "Lighthouse," gets mistranslated as "Liberty Garden" on the guide on the upper right.  The "Liberty Garden" on the bottom guide is also erased and replaced with..."Liberty Garden."  I guess so the fonts all match or something?
