Dogasu's Backpack | Old Updates Archive | February 2013

I hope you like the Rocket-Dan
February 28th, 2013

Dogasu @ 00:09 JST -- Is it weird to say that I sometimes look things up on my own site?  Like, if I want to take a screencap from an episode and want to know which DVD it's from, I'll just pull up the DVD Guide here on Dogasu's Backpack and use that find out which disc of which set the episode's on.  And if I want to know which CD has a certain song, I'll look it up on this site's CD Guide.  In other words, I benefit from having that information all in one place just as much as you guys do.

Tonight's update - a Feature dedicated to Pokemon Radio Show!  The Rocket-Dan's Secret Empire - is another update like that.  I sometimes want to look up which skit is in which episode or who the guest was each week but I can't because nobody else (to my knowledge) has bothered to make a handy guide chronicling all that.  So in a way, this update is just as much for me as it is for you guys.

Pokemon Radio Show! The Rocket-Dan's Secret Empire

I'm nowhere near finished with this page yet, but I wanted to at least get something out there to celebrate this uniquely Japanese part of the franchise.

Pokemon Radio Show! The Rocket-Dan's Secret Empire - Kojirou Pokemon Radio Show! The Rocket-Dan's Secret Empire - Nyasu

I've also updated the CD Guide with the covers for the second and third Pokemon Radio Show!  The Rocket-Dan's Secret Empire CDs as well as the track listing for the first CD.  The "Musashi 1," "Musashi 2," Musashi 3," etc. tracks are new "interviews" with Musashi created just for the CD, so those of you who actually followed the radio show back when it aired will still have something new to look forward to with this CD.

Speaking of interviews...the CD version of the radio show doesn't have any of the voice actor interviews on it.  It's a shame, really, because those were actually my favorite parts of the show.  Hopefully one of the other CDs will have them?

Finally, I've updated the page for Rocket-Dan yo Eien ni and have added a new translation for the song's lyrics.

Rocket-Dan yo Eien ni

I'll try to update again later this week.

Honda Chieko, 1963 - 2013
February 24th, 2013

Dogasu @ 19:32 JST -- Voice actor Honda Chieko (本多 知恵子) passed away last week at the age of 49.  Anime News Network reports:

The talent agency Aoni Production announced on Friday that voice actress Chieko Honda passed away due to multiple forms of cancer on February 18. Honda was undergoing treatment for cancer before succumbing.

Ms. Honda's extensive resumé includes providing the voice of Natane, the second Gym Leader that Satoshi faced in Pocket Monsters Diamond & Pearl.

Natane

I hope you'll join me in wishing that Ms. Honda rest in peace.  My condolences go out to her family and friends.

"Snivy Plays Hard to Catch!"
February 19th, 2013

Dogasu @ 22:58 JST -- Remember when, back in November, I revealed my plan for future episode comparisons?  I said that I was going to go back and do all the Season 14 comparisons that I hadn't gotten around to doing yet and to fill in all those gaps before moving on.  Well, "Holiday Hi-Jynx" kind of distracted me back in late December / early January (who could have predicted that there would be a new version of that episode in the year 2012!?), but I'm finally ready to start putting my plan into action.  So here's the comparison for "Snivy Plays Hard to Catch!"

"Snivy Plays Hard to Catch!"

It's always kind of neat to go back to these episodes years after they air to see just how much things have changed since then.  A few things are the same (Tsutarja has the exact same moveset now that it had two years ago, WTF writers!?) but other things are wildly different.  Like how the music editors didn't rely so heavily on the music from the movies the way they do now.  Or how, back then, everyone complained about how Iris did nothing and that she needed more time in the spotlight.  We were so cute back then!!

The General Edits page has been updated as well.

Anyway, I remember kind of liking the next few episodes, so hopefully I'll be able to get those comparisons out sooner rather than later.

The Rocket-Dan's Secret Live
February 16th, 2013

Dogasu @ 11:25 JST -- Details of "The Rocket-Dan's Secret Live," the live event tied to the radio show that was broadcast in the second half of 2012, have been made available!

Pokemon Radio Show!

The event will be held on Saturday, February 23rd from 2:00pm until 3:00pm (doors open at 1:30pm) at the Grande Shibuya.  The voice actors for the Rocket-Dan - Hayashibara Megumi (Musashi), Shinichirou Miki (Kojirou), and Inuyama Inuko (Nyasu) - will be there, but the event organizers have pointed out there will be a screen in front of the actors to obscure the audience's view of them.   I'm assuming this is to help keep the illusion that the Rocket trio are actually at this event alive; I wouldn't be surprised if Hayashibara and the others wear wigs or whatever else to give them the same silhouettes as their characters.

To attend the event, you'll need to go to any of the Animate stores throughout Japan and either purchase or reserve one of the Pokemon Radio Show!  The Rocket-Dan's Secret Empire! CDs (the first of which comes out this Friday).  You'll receive a raffle sheet for the event at the cash register, and after filling out the pertinent information (including your CD's serial number and your Club Animate information, which you'll need to sign up for before the due date), you'll need to mail it in to the following address:

〒173-0021
東京都板橋区弥生町77-3
株式会社アニメイト 「Pokemon Radio Show! ロケット団ひみつ帝国」 シークレットライブ 応募係
173 - 0021
Tokyo-to, Itabashi-ku, Yayoi-cho
Kabushiki Gaisha Animate "Pokemon Radio Show!  Rocket-Dan Himitsu Teikoku" Secret Live Oubo Kakari

Those interested have until Friday, March 8th to send in their forms.  After that date, a raffle will be held and whoever is lucky enough to have their name drawn will be sent an admission ticket in the mail.

The standard fine print for these sorts of things - one ticket per winner, you can't get tickets for a third party, you may be asked to prove that you're the person whose name is on the ticket, no filming or recording during the event is allowed, managment has the option to kick out anyone who causes trouble, etc. - is found on the event's page as well.

An official recording of the event will be made (so there's really no point in trying to sneak in a camcorder anyway), but no word has been given about when that will be made available to the public.

News News News News News
February 13th, 2013

Dogasu @ 18:58 JST -- Let me get through the news first:
  • Three new episode titles have been added to the List of TV Episodes.
  • There's a new Eevee evolution, so its name has been added to the List of Pokemon.  Japanese fans online are speculating that its name comes from nymph (ニンフ) and are therefore guessing that it is either a Bug or a Flying-Type.  There are also people who suspect that it comes from infinity (インフィニティ) and point to the "ribbons" on its body as looking like the symbol for infinity.  Finally, there are people wondering if it's based on nymphomania (ニンフォマニア, also known as 色情狂), but these people are obviously insane and should be ignored.  Edit:  I'm going to go ahead and go with Nymphia since we now know that the French name of the pokemon is also going with the "nymph" explanation.
  • The full title of this summer's movie has been added to its page in the Movie Guide.  I'm glad they went with Myuutwo because the fact that a Genosect vs. Myuutwo movie pretty much writes itself means it will be really, really hard for them to eff this whole thing up.
  • The English version of Meloetta's Dazzling Recital is debuting on the just released Pokémon TV app this Friday, so...yay?  I had assumed that I wouldn't be able to watch any of the videos on the Pokémon TV app because the Pokémon TV website is region locked, but when I downloaded the app and started it up I found that I could.  Weird.
  • So, Pokemon Scramble U is coming out this Spring.  I'd prefer a Pokemon Ranger game myself, but either way my prediction about there being something else between now and Pocket Monsters X and Pocket Monsters Y came true so I'm happy.
Next, let's get through some site updates!

First, I've updated the page for Volume 43 of Pocket Monsters Special with a magazine-to-graphic novel edit that I missed.  Thanks to Ataro for pointing that out to me.

Musha's tongue

Next, I've updated the timeline page of my "The Rocket-Dan vs. The Plasma-Dan!" write-up with the information from last week's episode.  Basically, the two-parter's been officially retconned out of the series, so what do you guys think will happen now?

Who's Handsome?

Finally, I've updated the CD Guide (finally!) with the cover art for the first of the Pokemon Radio Show!  The Rocket-Dan's Secret Empire CDs!

Pokemon Radio Show! The Rocket-Dan's Secret Empire - Musashi

I plan to pick the CD up when it comes out next Friday.  Can't wait!!

Pocket Monsters Special Volume 43
February 9th, 2013

Dogasu @ 18:13 JST -- The forty-third volume of Pocket Monsters Special was released in Japan about two weeks ago, and since it features the graphic novel debut of the Black & White Chapter (something I've been covering on this site for the past year or so) I've decided to write up a page for it.

Pocket Monsters Special Volume 43

I've got summaries of the four HeartGold & SoulSilver chapters (which I had never read a chapter of before picking up this graphic novel) as well as an in-depth look at the differences between the version of Black & White chapters seen in the magazines and the version seen in this graphic novel release.

This is my first time covering a full volume of Pocket Monsters Special for this site (crazy, I know!) and I'd like to know what you think.  Do you want me to keep doing this for future volumes of the series?  Is there anything you'd like me to do differently?  I only have the magazine versions of the Black & White chapters, so I won't be able to do any magazine-to-graphic-novel comparisons for anything earlier than that, but what about The Tenth Chapter onward?

Volume 44 is set to be released on March 28th.

Reminder:  Dogasu's Backpack and Social Media
February 1st, 2013

Dogasu @ 18:26 JST -- Did you know that Dogasu's Backpack has its own Facebook and Twitter?  I know some of you don't, or maybe you did but you forgot, so I thought I'd take some time at the beginning of each month to promote my social media pages.  I update them whenever this site's updated, of course, and also whenever I have something else to share that I would maybe not know where to put on the website proper.  Follow one, or follow both, or follow neither one; it's up to you!

Also, question:  Should I bother with setting up a Google+ account for the site?  Are there enough of you out there who would want such a thing?
