Takeshi Shudo, 1949 - 2010

Dogasu @ 07:04 JST -- I hate having to write this, but it has been confirmed that Takeshi Shudo, one of the writers of the original Pocket Monsters series, has passed away. He was 61 years old.
I want to make a tribute to the man, but I honestly feel that anything I could come up with wouldn't do him justice. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of information about his life available in English, I noticed, so I've decided to go through his Japanese Wikipedia entry and more or less translate it into English. I hope that will be worth something.
Takeshi Shudo (首藤剛志) was born on August 18th, 1949 in Fukuoka prefecture. He moved around a lot when he was little, living in the Tokyo metropolitan area, Sapporo City, and Nara prefecture. Later, after failing to get into a university, he read a magazine named Scenario that his younger sister had bought. He eventually decided to attend a screenplay institute while he saved up the money needed for a prep school. At the institute, he got recognized for a screenplay he had written and, at the age of nineteen, saw his television writing debut in 1969's period drama The Oedo Dragnet (大江戸捜査網). However, he soon got fed up with people tampering with his scripts without his permission and decided that he didn't want to write screenplays like that. Eventually, he ended up becoming a salesman for educational tools. He still worked as a screenwriter on the side, working on girls' manga and helping develop the plot for TV dramas, but he never took credit for any of this work.
Mr. Shudo used the money he had saved up from his work as a salesman to travel around Europe. When he got back, an acquaintance of his introduced him to Miyauchi Fukiko, a screenwriter for a company named Dax International. There, he made his second official debut as a screenwriter in a 1976 episode of Old Stories of the Manga World (まんが世界昔ばなし). He continued working for the company, writing for series like Isabelle of Paris (巴里のイザベル) and The First Manga Story (まんがはじめて物語). He also began work on Reed Production shows Fairy Princess Minky Momo (魔法のプリンセス ミンキーモモ) and GoShogun (戦国魔神ゴーショーグン). Minky Momo director Yuyama Kunihiko was impressed with his work on those two series that he asked him to work on the new series he was working on, Pocket Monsters.
Takeshi Shudo also worked on 1982's That's Sarutobi For Ya (さ すがの猿飛), 1990's Welcome to the Idol Angel (アイドル天使ようこそようこ), and 1994's I'll Make a Habit of It! (超くせになりそう). In 1984, he won the First Annual Japanese Animation Screenwriter Award for his work on The First Manga Story, Fairy Princess Minky Momo, and That's Sarutobi For Ya. Most recently, Shudou Takeshi was a contributor to the website Anime Style.
As previously mentioned, Takeshi Shudo was a writer for the Pocket Monsters TV series. In total, he wrote nineteen episodes, three movies, and a TV special.
Mr. Shudo also wrote the two CD Dramas, "It's a White Tomorrow! The Rocket-Dan" (白い明日だ!ロケット団) and "Sound Picture Box - The Birth of Myuutwo" (サウンドピクチャーボックス ミュウツーの誕生) and is credited with writing the Rocket-Dan's motto. He has also been credited with coming up with the legendary pokemon Lugia.
The Bulbagarden forums have a thread for blogs he wrote about the series here. They offer a rare insight into the production of the series and shows just how much he cares about the characters he helped create. Without his input, Pocket Monsters would have become a drastically different product.
Rest in peace, Takeshi Shudo. You will be missed.

Pocket Monsters BW Version

Dogasu @ 07:04 JST -- So you know how I've been posting those summaries of Master!! Pokemon Black & White? Well, now I'm going to start posting summaries of the other series running in CoroCoro Comics, Pocket Monsters BW Version as well.
I've been thinking about doing this for a while, and the fact that we just started a new region finally made me get off my butt and finally do it. Enjoy!
I've also added the lyrics to the full version of Best Wishes!, the opening theme to the TV series of the same name. The full version has apparently been online since before the series even started, but I only found out about it a few days ago thanks to my Facebook page. Whoops!
And I'm sure you've already seen this article about Pokemon Snap, as seen on Kotaku and then reported on by Bulbanews, but have you seen this one about the creepy Korean Pikachu rides? Terrifying!

Dogasu @ 20:13 JST -- I'm slightly amused by the fact that this week's dub episode and the Best Wishes! episode that'll be airing on Thursday are both centered around love.
Anyway, here's the comparison for the last Team Rocket episode of Diamond & Pearl, "For the Love of Meowth!"
I've also added a new English title to the List of TV Episodes.
In music news, the Japanese Amazon site has added the cover art for the Best Wishes! CD single coming out next month. Accordingly, I've added the cover to the CD Guide.
We still haven't gotten a CD release of Kimi no Mune ni La La La, the final ending theme to Diamond & Pearl, but I'm sure it'll pop up on some compilation album someday.
"Nintendo DS Pocket Monsters Black & White Super Music Collection" Track Listing

Dogasu @ 00:09 JST -- The soundtrack to Pocket Monsters Black & White was released in Japan this Wednesday! I got my copy in the mail yesterday, so I went and typed up the track listing for you all.
Both Play-Asia ($27.49) and CD Japan ($30.44) are selling the four disc set.

The dub of this episode finally aired this past weekend after being delayed for about two months, so check out what TPCI did with the extra time.
I've also updated the List of TV Episodes with the correct title for the ninth episode as well as the tenth episode of Best Wishes!
Also, check out this fascinating, NSFW list of nicknames you're not allowed to give your pokemon in Pocket Monsters Black & White. I wasn't aware that game developers ever did anything like this, but apparently this sort of thing is fairly common. Huh.
"A Grand Fight for Winning!" and "Master!! Pokemon Black & White" Chapter Three

For starters, I've finished the comparison for the last episode of the Grand Festival, "A Grand Fight for Winning!"
Since this episode is basically the end of Pokemon Contests, I wanted to make sure I didn't half-ass it. That old school Dogasu type rant I put in there took a bit of time as well.
On the manga side of things, the November 2010 issue of CoroCoro Comics came out on Friday. So, a summary for the new chapter of Master!! Pokemon Black & White has been added to the page for that series. I've also added a bio for the new Pokemon Ranger character who appears in the chapter.
In DVD news, it looks like Viz is releasing another DVD box set! Unfortunately, it's just the second Pokémon Elements DVD set, which is basically just a repackaging of the single DVDs.
Finally, there's an interview available on the page for the Pocket Monsters Black & White soundtrack coming out this Wednesday. They don't really say anything too interesting, but it's still fun to see Masuda Jun'ichi spend half the intreview playing with his Reshiram and Zekrom plushies. The four disc set will come out this Wednesday, October 20th, and will contain "more than three hours and fifty minutes worth of music," according ot the site. Can't wait!

Dogasu @ 23:35 JST -- Part two! Here's the comparison for "Opposites Interact!"
I don't know whether or not this is common knowledge, but the images I use for each comparison are the same ones TV-Tokyo posts on their site as the promo image for the episode. You see that picture of Satoshi up at the upper left-hand corner of this page? That's going to be the image I use for the comparison to the fifth Best Wishes! episode, whenever that airs.
I've been recapturing the images from my copies of the episodes and making new ones because a) the ones TV-Tokyo provided are cropped, b) they have text all over them, and c) they're not the greatest quality ever. Well, the image for this particular episode was particularly difficult for me to obtain. It's a really generic pose and, in this case, goes by so quickly that it's extremely easy to miss. If any of you have a copy of the episode, check it out and see if you can spot this shot in your first viewing. I imagine that a lot of you won't be able to.
I guess my point is...sometimes, the TV-Tokyo website picks annoying screenshots?
Also, starting this Saturday (October 16th), Cartoon Network will start airing the show at 8:00am EST instead of 7:00am. So if you're the kind of person who gets up on Saturday mornings to watch the dub, be aware that you'll be able to sleep in an hour earlier for the foreseeable future.

A number of you have given me feedback on the List of Pokemon I posted for the Isshu group, so I went in and tweaked it a bit. I imagine that this list is going to be revised again and again, especially as more and more of the official romanizations are revealed, so check back often!
I've also added the lyrics to Kokoro no Fanfare, the first ending theme to Best Wishes, as well as a translation! I've also added a translation for the series' opening theme, Best Wishes!
The List of TV Episodes has been updated with a new batch of English titles and one new Japanese title. Looks like the English version of the Pokemon Ranger episode is airing after the Grand Festival, as a lot of us predicted. While I'm on the subject of the third Ranger game, the official American site for the game has been updated with a lot of new English names. It also shows us that Natsuya's name in the English version is going to be "Ben," something we kinda already knew but is still nice to see confirmed.
In video game news, Nintendo had their annual Nintendo Conference the other day and made some eagerly awaited announcements about their upcoming handheld, the Nintendo 3DS. These announcements include:
Also announced at the conference was Battle & Get! Pokemon Typing DS (バトル＆ゲット！ポケモンタイピングDS), a new game for the existing DS hardware that's due out in 2011. The official Pokemon website describes the game as a "typing action game" in which players use the keyboard that comes bundled with the game (something most sites are neglecting to report, for some reason) to conduct pokemon battles. Think of it like a kid-friendly version of The Typing of the Dead, if you like. The game will feature hundreds of pokemon, including those introduced in Black & White, and will have a variety of environments that include a forest, a beach, and a cave. No English release has been announced yet, but I really don't see any reason to believe that we won't see this game in the U.S.
I'll end this update by letting you guys know that Amazon now has a listing for Mizobuchi Makoto's comic adaptation of "Arceus and the Jewel of Life." The English version of the graphic novel is going to be released by Viz on February 1st, 2011 and will retail for the standard price of US $7.99. Accordingly, I went and took down the panel-by-panel summary I had posted on the comic's page and have replaced them with shorter, less detailed summaries.
I'm working on the comparison for "Dealing With a Fierce Double Ditto Drama!" and hope to be able to post that soon.

I don't know whether or not this is common knowledge, but the images I use for each comparison are the same ones TV-Tokyo posts on their site as the promo image for the episode. You see that picture of Satoshi up at the upper left-hand corner of this page? That's going to be the image I use for the comparison to the fifth Best Wishes! episode, whenever that airs.

I've been recapturing the images from my copies of the episodes and making new ones because a) the ones TV-Tokyo provided are cropped, b) they have text all over them, and c) they're not the greatest quality ever. Well, the image for this particular episode was particularly difficult for me to obtain. It's a really generic pose and, in this case, goes by so quickly that it's extremely easy to miss. If any of you have a copy of the episode, check it out and see if you can spot this shot in your first viewing. I imagine that a lot of you won't be able to.
I guess my point is...sometimes, the TV-Tokyo website picks annoying screenshots?
Also, starting this Saturday (October 16th), Cartoon Network will start airing the show at 8:00am EST instead of 7:00am. So if you're the kind of person who gets up on Saturday mornings to watch the dub, be aware that you'll be able to sleep in an hour earlier for the foreseeable future.

I had writer's block for a lot of the time I was working on this, so it took me longer to complete than I had hoped.
I've also seem to have become unable to post on my site's Facebook page. I'm working on trying to get the issue resolved, so please be patient in the meantime.
I've already started work on the comparison for "Last Call - First Round!" and hope to have it posted sometime this week.

A number of you have given me feedback on the List of Pokemon I posted for the Isshu group, so I went in and tweaked it a bit. I imagine that this list is going to be revised again and again, especially as more and more of the official romanizations are revealed, so check back often!
I've also added the lyrics to Kokoro no Fanfare, the first ending theme to Best Wishes, as well as a translation! I've also added a translation for the series' opening theme, Best Wishes!
The List of TV Episodes has been updated with a new batch of English titles and one new Japanese title. Looks like the English version of the Pokemon Ranger episode is airing after the Grand Festival, as a lot of us predicted. While I'm on the subject of the third Ranger game, the official American site for the game has been updated with a lot of new English names. It also shows us that Natsuya's name in the English version is going to be "Ben," something we kinda already knew but is still nice to see confirmed.
In video game news, Nintendo had their annual Nintendo Conference the other day and made some eagerly awaited announcements about their upcoming handheld, the Nintendo 3DS. These announcements include:
- The system will launch in Japan on February 26th, 2011. A North American release will come in March.
- The system will sell for 250,000 yen, which, in today's dollars, is close to US $300. Now before you freak out about the price, remember that a) the exchange rate is the worst it's been in fifteen years or so, b) sales tax is already included in Japanese MRSPs, and c) things tend to be more expensive in Japan anyway. We have absolutely no reason to believe that the system will be priced at $300 for the US or anywhere else.
- A Virtual Console offering old school Game Boy and Game Boy Color games will be available. Some sites had reported that Game Boy Advance games would be offered as well, but that hasn't been confirmed yet. Anyway, while I can totally see Nintendo not releasing the main series games due to a number of factors, I can definitely see some of the puzzle games making their way to the service.
Also announced at the conference was Battle & Get! Pokemon Typing DS (バトル＆ゲット！ポケモンタイピングDS), a new game for the existing DS hardware that's due out in 2011. The official Pokemon website describes the game as a "typing action game" in which players use the keyboard that comes bundled with the game (something most sites are neglecting to report, for some reason) to conduct pokemon battles. Think of it like a kid-friendly version of The Typing of the Dead, if you like. The game will feature hundreds of pokemon, including those introduced in Black & White, and will have a variety of environments that include a forest, a beach, and a cave. No English release has been announced yet, but I really don't see any reason to believe that we won't see this game in the U.S.
I'll end this update by letting you guys know that Amazon now has a listing for Mizobuchi Makoto's comic adaptation of "Arceus and the Jewel of Life." The English version of the graphic novel is going to be released by Viz on February 1st, 2011 and will retail for the standard price of US $7.99. Accordingly, I went and took down the panel-by-panel summary I had posted on the comic's page and have replaced them with shorter, less detailed summaries.
