The Plasma-Dan have resurrected a pokemon named Genosect from a 300 million year old fossil. The pokemon reach a place where they think their home is but become dismayed when they see that it's been changed into a rocky mountain ravaged by a blizzard.
"I WANT TO GO HOME." The five Genosect, in seeking out the same landscape from 300 million years ago, set their sights on New Tork City (ニュートークシティ). Mewtwo is able to hear the voices of the Genosect. Mewtwo is a pokemon who was born from the genes of Mew; it, like Genosect, is a pokemon who was created by man.
As their journey continues, Satoshi and his friends have come to New Tork City to visit Pokemon Hills (ポケモンヒルズ), a facility set up to help preserve pokemon. Satoshi and his friends marvel at this place that allows pokemon to live so peacefully in the middle of such a busy city.
Suddenly, the Genosect arrive! The Red Genosect bursts onto the scene with amazing speed and fires off an energy ball right at Satoshi and his friends! "DESTROY ALL ENEMIES..." Satoshi and his friends end up being saved by none other than the legendary pokemon Mewtwo! "They are pokemon who shouldn't be in this world...just like me." While trying to empathize with the pokemon, Mewtwo helps stop the Genosect from attacking the rest of the pokemon in the city. The pokemon's fierce battle sends shockwaves that ripple throughout the entire city!
When both sides have gone beyond their limits, the greatest speed battle in pokemon history begins! What is the real power of the awakened Mewtwo? And how will this fateful clash end up? Satoshi has vowed to return the Genosect to their home...can Satoshi and Pikachu save the city from its crisis and fulfill their promise to the Genosect!?
One summer night, Pikachu, Kibago, Yanapp, and Mijumaru meet a Nymphia in a flower garden and are invited to come with it the "Eevee House" (イーブイハウス) deep in the forest. When they arrive, they find out that Eevee and its friends - the doting Thunders, the shy Booster, Showers, Eifee, Blacky, Leafia, and Glacia - all live there together. Additionally, it seems that Nyasu and Sonansu work there as good looking housekeepers!?
An exciting sleepover is about to begin!
A TV Special known as Mewtwo - The Prologue to Its Awakening will air on July 11th, 2013. As the title implies, the story takes place before Satoshi and his friends meet the Mewtwo who visits New Tork City.

A "Riddle Solving Event" known as "Save the Amusement Park from the Extreme Speed Genosect" was held in Yomiuri Land from July 13th to September 1st, 2013. The attraction asked players to solve riddles and eventually team up with Mewtwo in order to save the amusement park from the Red Genosect.

A teaser for the movie was shown at the end of Kyurem vs. The Sacred Swordsman Keldeo showing Genosect flying around and shooting off its cannon.
According to director Yuyama Kunihiko, the location of this year's movie is based on New York City. He states that he wanted to have a location that personified the modern age to offer a nice contrast between it and this pokemon that comes from 300 million years ago. A park in the middle of the city called "Pokemon Hills" (ポケモンヒルズ) - which includes fields, forests, waterfalls, and wild pokemon - is based on Central Park.

The Extreme Speed Genosect and the Awakening of Mewtwo opened in second place at the box office. It was shown in 345 screens nationwide and made 486,293,500 yen over Saturday and Sunday. Cinema Today breaks down the audience attendance by saying that 62% of the audience was male and 38% were female, adding that 37% of that overall audience were elementary school kids, 28.2% were those over 30, and 17.6% were people in their 20s. The site estimates that a lot of those older audience members were parents chaperoning their kids. The film was beaten at the box office by Monsters University, now in its second week. Rounding out the top three is the Japanese film Galileo [sic] Project.
In its second week, The Extreme Speed Genosect and the Awakening of Mewtwo dropped to third place after Studio Ghibli's The Wind Has Risen and Monsters University. Studio Ghibli's newest film, by the way, made 960,885,850 yen in just two days, which is almost as much as this year's Pocket Monsters movie has been able to make in two weeks. The Genosect movie has earned 1,007,267,050 yen since it debuted, putting it just past the one billion yen mark.
The top three in the Japanese box office remained the same for The Extreme Speed Genosect and the Awakening of Mewtwo's third week. The movie has earned 1,462,090,650 yen since its debut.
This year's Pocket Monsters Best Wishes! movie fell to sixth place at the end of its fourth week in theaters. The movie has earned 1,881,870,350 yen since its debut. The rest of the Top Five in Japan this week were The Wind Has Risen, Solving Riddles Comes After Dinner - The Movie, Monsters University, The Lone Ranger, and Kamen Rider Wizard In Magic Land - The Movie. Two of the newcomers for this week feature Sakurai Shou (Solving Riddles Comes After Dinner - The Movie) and Johnny Depp (The Lone Ranger), two stars that typically do very well in Japan.
In week five The Extreme Speed Genosect and the Awakening of Mewtwo fell down to ninth place. The other eight films were The Wind Has Risen, World War Z (which is only just now making its way to Japan), Monsters University, Solving Riddles Comes After Dinner - The Movie, The Lone Ranger, Pacific Rim (ditto), Shounen H, and Kamen Rider Wizard in Magic Land - The Movie. This year's Pocket Monsters movie has made 2,232,853,200 yen so far.
The movie remained in ninth place during its sixth week in theaters and has made 2,657,229,300 yen since its release. The rest of the Top Ten is The Wind Has Risen, Monsters University, Solving Riddles Comes After Dinner - The Movie, War World Z, White House Down, Shounen H, Lone Ranger, and Pacific Rim.
The film spent Week Seven in tenth place and has earned 2,872,239,200 yen since its release. The rest of the Top Ten are The Wind Has Risen, Monsters University, Star Trek Into Darkness, Solving Riddles Comes After Dinner - The Movie, White House Down, Gatchaman, World War Z, Shounen H, and Lone Ranger.
The movie fell off of the Top Ten in its eighth week in theaters.
