Pocket Monsters Sun
& Moon moves to Sunday nights in October
August 31st, 2018
Dogasu @ 22:03 JST -- Last night TV-Tokyo announced that the Pocket Monsters Sun & Moon animated series, which currently airs Thursday nights from 6:55pm JST, as well as Boruto - Naruto Next Generations, which currently airs Thursday nights from 7:25pm JST, will both be moving from their current Thursday night timeslots to a new Sunday night block starting October 7th.
The above, which was originally posted on TV-Tokyo's homepage for the show, says "An important message from Pocket Monsters Sun & Moon! Starting Sunday, October 7th the show will move to airing every Sunday at 6:00pm! Make sure you don't forget!!" It also states that the final episode to air during the Thursday evening timeslot will be the September 13th episode. Boruto - Naruto Next Generations, meanwhile, will move to the Sunday evening 5:30pm JST slot.
This means that the schedule from now until the 7th, as far as we know, looks something like this:
The head of TV-Tokyo's animation division, Hirokazu Oshida (押田裕一), made the following statement about the move:
(It should be noted that Mr. Oshida is apparently new to his position; it was announced that he was taking over as the head of TV-Tokyo's animation division in June of this year. Before that he was the president and CEO of the network's communications department.)
The Sunday 5:30pm timeslot that Boruto - Naruto Next Generations will be taking over is currently occupied by a variety show called The Gulliver You Should Know ~The Excellent Company Files~ (知られざるガリバー～エクセレントカンパニーファイル～) while the 6:00pm timeslot that Pocket Monsters Sun & Moon is taking over is currently occupied by the variety show If You Get a Car, What Would You Like To Do? (車あるんですけど…？ ). Both variety programs will be moving to new timeslots of their own after October 7th.
Pocket Monsters Sun & Moon's new timeslot will put the show in direct competition with rival network Fuji TV's long-running Chibi Maruko-chan.
Unlike the U.S., where TV shows change timeslots all the time, a show on a terrestrial Japanese TV station changing its timeslot is a very rare event indeed. The very first Pocket Monsters series originally aired on Tuesday nights at 7:00pm from until the Pokemon Shock incident forced the show off the air for a few months and then move to a new night and time, Thursdays at 7:00pm. It kept that timeslot for about 18 years before shifting slightly to a 6:55 start time with the April 7th, 2016 episode.
Unshou Ishizuka, 1951 - 2018

Dogasu @ 23:25 JST -- Unshou Ishizuka (石塚運昇), the voice of characters like Dr. Ookido and the Narrator in the Pocket Monsters animated series / movies, passed away on Monday, August 13th. He was 67 years old.
His talent agency, Aoni Production, made the announcement on their website a few days later on Friday, August 17th:
(Japanese obituaries use what's called the kazoedoushi system, an old and mostly obsolete standard that calculates your age starting with your time in the womb, not from the day you were actually born. This, in turn, usually makes your kazoedoushi age a year older than the age we would normally recognize. Mr. Ishizuka was born on May 16th, 1951 which made him 67 years old at the time of his death).
I want to avoid statements like "we lost one of the greats" or "this is a big one!" because it implies that his death is somehow more tragic than the others who have died before him. Ranking voice actors' deaths by how many roles they played is gross. At the same time, however, it's hard to look at his resume and not feel that the animated series will never be the same again now that he's no longer with us.

Dogasu @ 06:15 JST -- I've got a massive Unshou Ishizuka post that I'm working on but, in the meantime, let's check in to see how Pocket Monsters The Movie "Everyone's Story" did for the weekend of August 18th - 19th.
It did...well, it fell out of the Top Ten. Basically everything that was ranked 7 or below last week is out as newcomers Gintama 2: Rules Are Meant To Be Broken, Seven Deadly Sins: Prisoners of the Sky, and Penguin Highway. For comparison's sake, last year's Pocket Monsters The Movie "I Choose You!" took nine weeks to fall out of the Top Ten but, to be fair, its competition wasn't nearly as strong.

Since the 21st Pocket Monsters film fell out of the Top Ten none of the usual sites are reporting its box office returns.
If the film ever returns to the Top Ten then I'll report that at the time; otherwise the next box office related update I'll make for this film will be when Toho makes its final earnings at the end of the year.

Translation Tuesdays Week Whatever - Pocket Monsters The Movie "I Choose You!" Director's Commentary

Dogasu @ 22:05 JST -- So hey, I'm still doing this whole #TranslationTuesdays thing! This week's entry is more translation-adjacent that anything else but that's OK because it's something really cool; a write-up on the director's commentary for Pocket Monsters The Movie "I Choose You!"
So here's what happened. Back on July 12th, TV-Tokyo broadcast Pocket Monsters The Movie "I Choose You!" and as they were airing it they were also streaming a live commentary online with the film's director Kunihiko Yuyama. That commentary ended up containing a lot of brand new information and I wanted to make sure it all got documented somewhere so I made an extensive write-up on the commenary. It's something I haven't really seen written about on Japanese websites, much less English ones, and I'm super thrilled to hear what you all think about it.
For next week I'll be translating an interview related to this year's film, Pocket Monsters The Movie "Everyone's Story." Can't wait to get back into the groove of things again!
"Everyone's Story" Japanese Box Office Performance, Week Five

Dogasu @ 07:40 JST -- Pocket Monsters The Movie "Everyone's Story" has been in theaters for over a month now. Is it still chugging along?
Well, yeah, about as well as can be expected. The latest Pocket Monsters film slid down to 9th place for the weekend of August 11th - 12th thanks to the arrival of Ocean's 8 which came in at 5th place. The Top Three remained the same - Code Blue, Mission: Impossible, Incredibles 2 - while Jurassic World somehow managed to claw its way back up to fourth place. Everyone else went down a spot, more or less.

Dogasu @ 12:40 JST -- We've all known about this for a while now but since tonight's the night when this episode would have aired in the U.S. I thought I'd finally give my thoughts about the English dub skipping over "Satoshi and Nagetsukesaru! A Touchdown of Friendship!!"
There's not much to the write-up (it's basically "well yeah, of course they did") but it's still something I wanted to bring up on the site. How do you feel about this episode not being brought over to the West? Let me know through one of the links below!

Pocket Monsters The Movie "Everyone's Story" fourth week in theaters ended with it coming in eighth place. That probably seems pretty awful until you look at the rest of the Top Ten and realize that yeah, this was probably inevitable. This past weekend was packed with premiers of huge summer blockbusters like Mission: Impossible - Fallout and the Japanese release of Incredibles 2 and so it's only natural that Pocket Monsters would get knocked down a few pegs. And then! There's the tenth place film One Cut of the Dead, a Shaun of the Dead-type film that's been out since June and was screened in a grand total of two theaters throughout Japan and yet somehow managed to crawl its way into the Top Ten. This weekend at the box office truly was a strange one.
