Pocket Monsters Special - The B2 & W2 Chapter

Dogasu @ 19:12 JST -- Over the summer the Eleventh Chapter of Pocket Monsters Special, B2 & W2, was printed in issues of Pokemon Fan and CoroCoro Ichiban!. I unfortunately neglected to keep up with the series over the past few months so today I'm playing catch up.
I've also cleaned up a few things in the rest of the section. I still need to go through the graphic novels and move things around in regards to that, but that update will have to come another day.
In unrelated news, the red text you saw at the top of this page is in regards to my report that Pocket Monsters The Origin will be streaming on the Nico Nico Live website. That report, unfortunately, turned out to be completely wrong. Nico Nico Live will be hosting a chatroom in which people can talk about the special as it airs, not the episode itself.
I totally fucked that one up. I don't know if I just missed the line on the official site that states that this isn't going to be the actual video or if that line was added later (I do know that the page was updated because that link to the Pocket Monsters The Origin page on the Nico Nico Live website wasn't there when I made the original report), but either way I made a misleading report and I apologize for it. I will do everything in my power to prevent something like this happening again.
Special Sneak Peak of the first episode of Pocket Monsters XY!

Dogasu @ 20:17 JST -- The official website for the upcoming series Pocket Monsters XY has just announced that a special sneak peak of the first episode will be shown at various shopping centers throughout Japan on Monday, October 14th! The series' official premiere isn't until the 17th but those who visit any of the following malls that Monday will be able to see a "special version" (特別版) of the episode!
The closest one to me is the one in Odaiba so maybe I'll try to make it...?
I've also added two new episodes to the List of TV Episodes.
"Saving Darmanitan from the Bell!"

Dogasu @ 12:00 JST -- You may remember how, back in February of this year (holy crap has it really been that long?), I mentioned that my plan for this site, in regards to which episode comparisons to do next, was to go back and do the rest of Season 14 ("Pokémon Black & White") before picking up where I had left off with the Kanto episodes. Y'know, fill in the gaps in that season and finally be able to say that I've compared all of the first year's worth of Best Wishes!? Well, after a number of detours here and there I'm finally ready to return to that plan. Here's the first of Best Wishes! since February of this year, "Saving Darmanitan from the Bell!"
It's a short one because there was pretty much nothing going on other than the standard music edits, but at the same time it's kind of nice to have an easy comparison to do after the marathon that was "Go West, Young Meowth." Hopefully the rest of the Best Wishes! comparisons will be easy like this one was so I can hurry up and get back to doing Kanto stuff again.
I've also added the two new fossil pokemon to the List of Pokemon.
It's Friday(-ish), so it's time for another round of "Pocket Monsters The Origin" updates!

Dogasu @ 00:40 JST -- A number of updates have been made to the "special site" for the upcoming Pocket Monsters The Origin special I mentioned in Thursday's update.
First up is news that the special will be divided into four "episodes." These episodes will be, in order: "Red," "Karakara," "Sakaki," and "Lizardon." If you figure about 22 minutes per episode then we're looking at about 88 minutes for the entire thing - or, roughly, an hour and a half. So far, so good.
Next up is the revelation that the Rocket-Dan Boss Sakaki will be voiced by Koyama Rikiya (小山力也). His extensive resume includes Yamato in Naruto Shippuden, Basch fon Rosenburg in the Playstation 2 game Final Fantasy XII, Kuze Hideo in Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex, Takamura Mamoru in Hajime no Ippo, and the second voice of Mouri Kogorou in Detective Conan. In Pocket Monsters, he played Penicillina in Myuutwo! I Am Here, Dr. Doc in the original series episode "Lucky's Medical Charts," and Kijuurou in the Diamond & Pearl episode "Roaring Ice Punch! Buoysel vs. Barriered!!"
The newly opened gallery section of the site confirms that a Myuutwo is going to make an appearance in the special as well, something I think most of us had already assumed was happening. It's still nice to get confirmation though!
There's also a screenshot that shows a HP bar on-screen during a battle, which is both unexpected and something that will help set this even further apart from the current TV series. It also shows that the made-up language from said TV series is rearing its ugly head into these specials because apparently the animators haven't gotten the memo that it's the year 2013 and that the English dub has gotten over its phobia of Japanese writing.
Finally, it was also announced that the special will be simulcast a special comments section will be open on the Nico Nico Live website specifically for this special. A membership to the site, which you can fill out in English, is required to view the broadcast participate, and as far as I know they don't region block their content so once you have that set up you should be good to go. The site does warn that there may be playback issues due to heavy traffic.

The site doesn't reveal anything new other than the names of a few of the members of the production staff (which I went ahead and added to my page for the special) but is definitely something to keep our eyes on in the weeks leading up to the special's October 2nd airing.

Dogasu @ 12:26 JST -- So after about three weeks or so of work, I've finally finished the comparison for "Go West, Young Meowth."
This is an episode I've always wanted to do a comparison for but didn't because I wanted to sort of do them in order. But then I did that feature on Nakagawa Shouko's book and saw that this was the only one of her "Top Five" episodes that I hadn't gotten around to comparing and thought "Hey, why wait? Why don't I just do this one now?" So, here we are.
I thought it was going to be a quickie comparison that I could churn out in just a couple of nights after work but it ended up turning into this monster of rewrites, mistranslations, and outright lies. Like, Pokémon Chronicles level of rewrites, mistranslations, and outright lies. Episodes like this where I get to pull back the curtain and reveal that, no, those lines they fed you all those years ago weren't in the original version are the reason I continue to do these comparisons. I hope you learn as much reading it as I did doing it.
I know I've been really sluggish this year when it comes to doing episode comparisons but this newest one has pumped up and ready to do some more. Can't wait to do more of these.

The Extreme Speed Genosect and the Awakening of Myuuwho?

Dogasu @ 06:52 JST -- The Extreme Speed Genosect and the Awakening of Myuutwo spent its seventh week in tenth place at the Japanese box office. The movie has earned 2,872,239,200 yen since its release. Yahoo! Japan is reporting that the movie fell off the Top Ten in its eighth week thanks to the premiere of movies like Man of Steel (by the way, do you guys know how maddening it's been trying to avoid spoilers for that movie over the past few months!?!?!?) and Sadako 3D 2.
So all in all, The Extreme Speed Genosect and the Awakening of Myuutwo's made about 500 million yen (about US $5 million) less than its predecessor. Yikes. The movie still manage to remain in the Top Ten for two months though, so the movie was successful even if it didn't bring in the same numbers that other films in the franchise have.
Also, the English version of the movie, renamed The Extreme Speed Genesect and the Legend Awakened, will debut on the American Cartoon Network on October 19th, 2013. I probably would have put Mewtwo's name in the title instead of something vague like "the Legend," but then again I'm not a marketing exec so what do I know? Also look, they spelled ExtremeSpeed out as two words instead of one, they're actually doing what they did in Japan and that's pretty cool. The DVD / Blu-ray most likely won't be out in Japan until December, so this will be the first chance those outside the country will be able to watch this movie.
Finally, I know I'm really behind on this, but this aired on Cartoon Network the other week:
Japanese text. Uncensored. In an episode of Pokémon.
So far there have been no reports of children's heads melting, Raiders of the Lost Ark style, due to the sight of such a terrifying, non-American writin' system. But I'll be sure to keep you posted.
My goal is to have the comparison for "Go West, Young Meowth" up over the weekend. My current draft of the comparison is at twelve pages long, which is only about four pages shorter than my write-up on Myuutwo Strikes Back. So...yeah.

Dogasu @ 18:50 JST -- More information continues to come in about Pocket Monsters The Origin as we get closer to the TV special's October 2nd air date.
Earlier today the official site announced two more voice actors for the special. Green will be played by Eguchi Takuya (江口拓也), left, the actor who played Cheren in Best Wishes! The site also announced that the Nibi City Gym Leader Takeshi will be played by Sugita Tomokazu (杉田智和), down there on the right. Mr. Sugita plays Gintoki in Gintama, Kyon in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and Ragna the Bloodege in Blazblue.
The article (as well as this one) also announced that some of the background music used in the special will be newly arranged versions of the music from the original Pocket Monsters Red & Green. These new tracks are being arranged by Kageyama Shouta (景山将太), the sound director of Pocket Monsters X & Y, and will be included as bonus tracks on the Nintendo 3DS Pokémon X Y Super Music Collection CD set that goes on sale November 13th. The original versions of these five songs will be included on the CD set as well, allowing players to listen to the original versions and then compare them to the newly arranged ones. We don't know what those five tracks will be yet, but I'll be sure to update the track listing as soon as we do.
We already knew that Pocket Monsters X & Y will have the Kanto starters and that each of those starters have new Mega Evolutions, and now here we are finding out that ten tracks (five originals and five rearrangements) of the soundtrack will be music from the original Red & Green games! What other connections will Generation VI have to the first games in the series?
"Pocket Monsters The Origin" Casting News

Dogasu @ 17:32 JST -- A tweet made by the Japanese official Pokemon Twitter page earlier this week reveals the first casting information for the upcoming TV special Pocket Monsters The Origin! Red will be played by Takeuchi Junko (竹内順子), a voice actress whose CV includes Naruto from Naruto Shippuden, Gon from Hunter X Hunter, and Mokuba from the Yu-Gi-Oh! series. The other voice actor announcement made in that tweet was Mori Katsuji (森功至) will be playing Orchid-Hakase. Mr. Mori is a veteran voice actor whose been active since the 1960s, playing a wide range of roles that include Mifune Go in the first Mach Go Go Go! series (released in the U.S. "Speed Racer"), 009 / Shimamura Jou in the first Cyborg 009 series, Ken the Eagle in Science Ninja Team Gatchaman ("Battle of the Planets" / "G-Force"), Garma Zabi in the original Mobile Suit Gundam, Nephrite in The Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon, and many, many, many more.
None of the other voice actors for the special have been announced for the special so far, but this is a start!
In other news, the box office numbers for The Extreme Speed Genosect and the Awakening of Myuutwo's seventh week have been announced. This weekend (Week Eight) is the last weekend of summer vacation so if the movie's going to make any sort of rebound, it's going to have to do so now.
I've also updated the List of TV Episodes with the newest Japanese and English titles.
Finally, since I haven't done this in a while, I would like to remind everyone that this site has both a Facebook page and a Twitter page and to urge those of you who aren't following them to go ahead and do so. New Pokemon + Pocket Monsters The Origin

Dogasu @ 06:43 JST -- Let's take a look at this month's new pokemon!
- Hariborg (ハリボーグ), the evolved form of Harimaron, comes from hari (針), or "needle"; and either bougu (防具), or "armor," or saiboogu (サイボーグ), or "cyborg."
- Tailnar (テールナー), the evolved form of
Fokko, seems to come from the word teeru
(テール), or "tail"; and renaaru
(ルナール), or "renard," the
French word for "fox." The
official website points out the branch coming out of its tail, hence
the name.
- Gekogashira (ゲコガシラ), the evolved form of Keromatsu, seems to come from a combination of geko (げこっ), the sound of a frog croaking, and kashira (頭), or "boss."
- Kaenjishi (カエンジシ), the evolved form of Shishiko, is pretty straightforward: it's a combination of kaen (火炎), or "flame"; and shishi (獅子), or "lion."
- The "Amar" part of Amars (アマルス) seems to
come from either Amarugasaurus
(アマルガサウルス) or
"Amargasaurus," a dinosaur who used to live in Argentina; or the word
"amalgam" (アマルガム). The end of the name seems to be from Marusu (マルス), or "Mars," the Greek
god of war.
- Chigaurus (チゴラス) is from chigo (稚児) or baby / child; and Tiranosaurusu (ティラノサウルス) or
"Tyrannosaurus."
- Trimmien (トリミアン) seems to be based on torimungu (トリミング), or "trimming" (we'd probably call it "grooming" in native English); and shian (シアン) or "chien," the French word for dog.
- Nyaonyx (ニャオニクス) is a combination of nyaa (ニャー), the sound a cat makes;
and either onikusu (オニクス), or "onyx," or nikusu (ニクス), which could either be
the German god Nyx, a
shapeshifting water spirit, or the Greek god Nyx,
the goddess of sleep. The latter seems more likely to me, but no
matter which one it is it seems clear that the nikusu part of the pokemon's name
is meant to be interpreted as "nyx."

TV-Tokyo Press Release

Dogasu @ 18:30 JST -- The TV-Tokyo website has put out a press release regarding a number of Pocket Monsters shows airing over the next few months.
Here's what it has to say:
- Pocket Monsters The Origin will air on October 2nd from 7:00pm to 8:49pm. This means the special will be about an hour and a half long if you factor in things like commercial breaks and opening / ending themes.
- It states that the new TV series, Pocket Monsters XY, will start airing every Thursday night starting October 17th, which is something we already knew.
- Pokemon Smash! is, predictably,
going to be replaced by a new show called Pokemon Get ☆ TV (ポケモンゲット☆TV) starting Sunday, October 6th.
Regular cast members will include Nakagawa Shouko
(中川翔子), the comedy duo Taka and Toshi
(タカアンドトシ), and Nishii Yukito (西井幸人) of the actors group D-Boys.
The show will keep its 7:30am timeslot and while I assume it'll still
be an hour long like its predecessor the press release doesn't say one

"Pocket Monsters The Origin" Casting News

Dogasu @ 17:32 JST -- A tweet made by the Japanese official Pokemon Twitter page earlier this week reveals the first casting information for the upcoming TV special Pocket Monsters The Origin! Red will be played by Takeuchi Junko (竹内順子), a voice actress whose CV includes Naruto from Naruto Shippuden, Gon from Hunter X Hunter, and Mokuba from the Yu-Gi-Oh! series. The other voice actor announcement made in that tweet was Mori Katsuji (森功至) will be playing Orchid-Hakase. Mr. Mori is a veteran voice actor whose been active since the 1960s, playing a wide range of roles that include Mifune Go in the first Mach Go Go Go! series (released in the U.S. "Speed Racer"), 009 / Shimamura Jou in the first Cyborg 009 series, Ken the Eagle in Science Ninja Team Gatchaman ("Battle of the Planets" / "G-Force"), Garma Zabi in the original Mobile Suit Gundam, Nephrite in The Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon, and many, many, many more.
None of the other voice actors for the special have been announced for the special so far, but this is a start!
In other news, the box office numbers for The Extreme Speed Genosect and the Awakening of Myuutwo's seventh week have been announced. This weekend (Week Eight) is the last weekend of summer vacation so if the movie's going to make any sort of rebound, it's going to have to do so now.
I've also updated the List of TV Episodes with the newest Japanese and English titles.
Finally, since I haven't done this in a while, I would like to remind everyone that this site has both a Facebook page and a Twitter page and to urge those of you who aren't following them to go ahead and do so. I post on those pages whenever I update the site, of course, but I also upload stuff to them that never make it here - for example, the Facebook page has a collection of photos I took from a Pocket Monsters Special signing I tried to go to last weekend while the Twitter page has various tweets made throughout my time there. They're definitely worth checking out!
