"Volcanion and the Tricky Magearna" - Plot Summary
July 19th, 2016

Dogasu @ 7:46 JST -- I just got back from watching the newest Pocket Monsters movie, Pokémon the movie XY&Z "Volcanion and the Tricky Magearna." In the past I've pointed you guys to my summaries of the manga adaptation and told you that what happens there is pretty much what happens in the movie but this year the movie and the manga diverge so much that this isn't possible. So, I went ahead and typed up a long, detailed plot summary, from beginning to end.

Do you have any additional questions about the movie that you can't find in this synopsis? Let me know via Facebook, Twitter, or over on Bulbagarden!

So let's talk about "Volcanion and the Tricky Magearna"
July 10th, 2016

Dogasu @ 16:17 JST -- Did you know that there's a new Pokemon movie coming out next week?

Volcanion and the Tricky Magearna

It's not hard to imagine that there are people out there completely unawares that we're less than a week away from the release of Volcanion and the Tricky Magearna. After the poor box office performance of last year's movie, a film that actually did OK by regular movie standards but absolutely abysmal by Pokemon standards, the effects to this year's movie are clear:

  • There doesn't seem to have been any Location Scouting trip taken this year, probably due to budget cuts. I predicted this back in February, by the way.
  • There's no Pikachu short this year for the first time since 2011's Victini and the Black Hero Zekrom / Victini and the White Hero Reshiram. There has to be a reason for that, and production issues are a likely suspect.
  • There's no supplemental episode being developed for this movie like Appear, the Small Djinn Hoopa, Princess Diancie of the Ore Kingdom, or Mewtwo - The Prologue to its Awakening. Again, budget cuts?
  • Seven-Eleven convenience stores here in Japan, which are usually filled with Pokemon merchandise this time of year, are dedicating their shelf spaces to One Piece Film Gold-related merchandise instead.
  • The movie's official site doesn't have nearly as many interviews or behind-the-scenes looks as it usually does.
There's also the fact that July 16th, the day Volcanion and the Tricky Magearna comes out, is also when the movie Finding Dory and the video games Yokai Watch 3 are going to be released. Maybe the people at Toho, the company that distributes the Pocket Monsters films, realized they have no hope of wrestling kids' attention away from all that and so they decided not to waste the money trying? Next year will (probably) see the release of the franchise's 20th movie so I'm thinking maybe they're playing it super safe this year so they'll have the money to throw a huge celebration next year.

Volcanion and the Tricky Magearna
July 7th, 2016

Dogasu @ 07:33 JST -- You've probably noticed that I have not been updating much at all over the past few months. What's up with that, Dogasu?  Well, I've actually been working on this massive project for the site and while I'm not quite ready to reveal what that is just yet I thought I'd take a break from working on it to remind myself that, oh yeah, there's a movie coming out in like ten days!

Volcanion and the Tricky Magearna

I've made a massive update to the page for Volcanion and the Tricky Magearna with all kinds of information, both from the official website and elsewhere. Updates include:
Lots of other minor tweaks here and there have been made as well.

The section's not finished and there's still content from the official site I want to bring over but I think today's update is at least better than nothing.
