Pokémon:
Detective Pikachu
Finding out how Pokémon:
Detective Pikachu did in the U.S. is one thing, but how about
its performance in the country that birthed the franchise in the first
place?
This page provides a detailed week-by-week look at how the
franchise's first live action movie did at the Japanese box office.
The film debuted in third place in its first week in theaters. According to entertainment news site Eiga.com, Pokémon Detective Pikachu brought in 457 million yen and was seen by 317,000 people for the two day period between Saturday May 4th and Sunday May 5th. For the entire four day weekend (the film opened on Friday the 3rd, Monday was a national holiday) Pokémon Detective Pikachu brought in 948 million yen and was seen by 676,000 people. Expectations are for the film to eventually top 2.5 billion. For comparison's sake, last summer's film, Pocket Monsters The Movie "Everyone's Story" brought in a little over 836 million yen in its first four days. First place, meanwhile, went to Detective Conan "The Fist of Blue Sapphire" while second place went to Avengers: Endgame. The rest of the Top Ten looks like this:

Detective Pikachu do in its sixth week?

The Japanese Top Ten was joined by Disney's live action Aladdin remake, a film that will remain in the Top Three even after the debut of Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution. The other newcomer this week is Children of the Sea, a film based on the manga of the same name (怪獣の子供) and which debuted at Number Five. The rest of the Top Ten looks like this:

Unfortunately, Pokémon Detective Pikachu fell out of the Top Ten in its seventh week in theaters. News outlets typically don't provide box office numbers for films that don't make it to the Top Ten and so the Week Six's numbers are the most recent ones we have. This page will be updated with the final box office numbers should Toho ever release them. |
