Pocket Monsters
| Story Synopsis | Characters | Pocket Monsters in the TV series | About the Author |
The manga started publication in the April 1996 issue of the bi-monthly magazine CoroCoro Special under the title The Mysterious Pokémon Pippi (ふしぎポ ケモン ピッピ). It ran for three chapters under this name before changing it to Pocket Monsters (ポケットモンスター) and moving over to the monthly CoroCoro Comics magazine starting with its September 1996 issue. The manga ran in both publications in parallel for the next 20+ years; CoroCoro Comics from September 1996 to November 2019 (23 years) and CoroCoro Special from February 1997 to April 2021 (24 years). These days, the manga is serialized on the CoroCoro Online website under the title Pocket Monsters Aniki Series (ポケットモンスター アニキ編). New chapters come out the last Sunday of each month and can be read for free. The world of the Pocket Monsters manga is unlike any other version of the franchise. While it does incoporate the scenarios and characters and basic elements from each of the video games, the series places most of its emphasis on filling each chapter with as many sight gags and absurd situations as possible. Almost every Pokémon in the manga can speak human language, can hold regular jobs, and have adventures alongside the regular animals (like fish and birds) and other Pokémon made up soley for the manga. Pokémon are able to evolve at will, and then are able to de-evolve at any time. Obviously, the world of the Pocket Monsters manga is quite different from any other interpretation of the series. The manga is written / drawn by Kousaku Anakubo (穴久保幸作).
