How did Mewtwo
Strikes Back Evolution do during its time in Japanese theaters?
This page provides a detailed week-by-week look at how the
franchise's first all-CG movie did at the Japanese box office.
Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution opened on Friday, July 12th
and managed to debut in 2nd place at the box office.
Entertainment news site eiga.com reports that the CG remake of 1998's Pocket Monsters The Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back! was shown in 408 screens (despite the 367 number you see in the table below, also provided by eiga.com) and watched by a total of 454,000 people between July 13th and 14th. The film brought in 553,000,000 yen in that same two-day period. That's a 110.6% increase in the first weekend earnings that its predecessor, Pocket Monsters The Movie "Everyone's Story." When you put Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution up against the more recent films you'll see that it had the best opening weekend of any Pokemon movie in Japan in the last half decade:
First place went to Toy Story 4, which is only just now making its way into Japanese theaters. That movie brought in an astounding 1.38 billion yen, more than double that of what Pokemon was able to earn, so there really was no contest here. Its predecessor was able to stay in the Top 3 of the Japanese box office at least eight weeks in a row back in 2010 so this year's film will probably stick around a while as well. Rounding out the Top 3 is the live action Aladdin remake, now in its sixth week in theaters in Japan. Here's what the rest of the Top Ten look like:

In its second week in theaters Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution fell to third place with the debut of Weathering With You, the sorta-kinda spiritual successor to the critically acclaimed Your Name. Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution was watched by 200,000 people over the two-day weekend and made an additional 251 million yen. Eiga.com is reporting that the movie has been seen by 1,050,000 people and has made 1.2 billion yen altogether. Here's what the rest of the Top Ten look like:

The movie fell from third to seventh place in its third week in theaters. The only number that's been released for the 22nd Pocket Monsters movie in its third week is news that the film has now earned a total of 1.7 billion yen. 2018's Pocket Monsters The Movie "Everyone's Story" reached 1.6 billion yen in its third week, so Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution is doing slightly better than its predecessor, box office wise. As for the rankings, newcomer The Great War of Archimedes took the Number 3 spot, the annual Kamen Rider / Super Sentai double feature took the Number 4 spot, and the Japanese debut of The Secret Life of Pets 2 took the Number 5 spot. The live action Aladdin remake, which up until now has been right behind Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution rankings-wise, managed to climb its way up the charts to wedge itself in between Toy Story 4 and the 22nd Pocket Monsters movie. Here's what the rest of the Top Ten look like:

The 22nd Pocket Monsters movie came in 8th place in its fourth week at the box office.
Eiga.com reports that as of this week, Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution has reached the 2 billion yen mark. That's only a tiny bit less than the 2.1 billion that Pocket Monsters The Movie "I Choose You!" (2017) had made by its fourth week in theaters. Looking at the rest of the Top Ten, newcomer Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw debuted at Number 2 and Dragon Quest Your Story came in at Number 4. Here's what the rest of the Top Ten look like:

Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution spent the first week of its second month in theaters in the Number 9 spot.
The first all-CG Pocket Monsters movie has been seen by 1,940,000 people and earned over 2.3 billion yen since its debut on July 12th, according to eiga.com. Last year's movie, in comparison, had also reached the 2.3 billion yen mark but had been seen by slightly more people (2.04 million). 2017's "I Choose You!" had made 2.5 billion by its fifth week. The Top Ten this week is joined by newcomers One Piece The Movie "Stampede" and the Japanese release of Disney's The Lion King remake. It's also worth noting that, as of this week, Toy Story 4 is the only other movie on the Top 10 to have been on the charts as long as Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution has. Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution got a bit of an o-bon summer break boost in its sixth week in theaters. The CG remake of the very first Pocket Monsters movie climbed up to 8th place after spending the previous week in the Number 9 spot. This isn't unheard of; previous Pocket Monsters films have moved up the charts during the summer break period in August. The newest Pocket Monsters movie has made 2.6 billion yen and has been seen by 2,160,000 people so far. The Top Ten is mostly the same as it was last week, only shuffled around a bit. Now that all the big summer blockbusters have come out we probably won't see too much movement in the coming weeks. The only real change is that the Kamen Rider / Super Sentai movie has fallen out of the Top Ten and been replaced with newcomer Dance With Me. Here's what the rest of the Top Ten look like:

The final full weekend in August saw Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution slip into the Number Ten spot. The latest numbers for the 22nd Pocket Monsters movie has it earning 2.7 billion yen since its debut. The Number 1 and 2 movies from last week switched spots while newcomer Ossan's Love The Movie "Love or Dead" rounded out the Top Three. Other newcomes include the Japanese debut of the Elton John biopic Rocketman at Number 6 and the Ni no Kuni movie at Number 7. Here's what the rest of the Top Ten look like:

Unfortunately, Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution fell out of the Top Ten in its eighth week in theaters. News outlets typically don't provide box office numbers for films that don't make it to the Top Ten and so the seventh week's numbers are the most recent ones we have. This page will be updated with the final box office numbers should Toho ever release them. |
