A thought occurred!

Dogasu @ 23:48 JST -- So you know the "Americanized Erika" I whipped up for the last comparison? Well, just a few minutes ago, I figured out a name for her:
Erica. With a "c." Because the word "America" ain't got no "k."
...and just to ensure that this "update" isn't a complete waste, I've added two new titles to the List of Anime Episodes.
Also, it looks like Uniqlo's gonna be having more Pocket Monsters shirts to coincide with this year's movie. You may remember how, last year, Uniqlo had a number of T-shirts designed specifically as tie-ins to Giratina and the Sky Bouquet, Shami. Well, they're going to be doing it again this year for Arceus - To the Conquering of Spacetime. The first batch will come out on May 4th with additional designs coming out in June and July.
The news doesn't really do much if you're not a Japanese kid living in Japan, but at least the site has a nice image of all the gang's pokemon that I hadn't seen before.

Here's "Pokémon Scent-sation" for you guys. Enjoy! And as always, I look forward to any feedback anybody might have. The List of Anime Episodes has been updated with a new title.
If you think back to my January 20th update, you'll remember me saying that I was planning to take a short break from the Kanto comparisons after Episode 026 to kind of go back over a few things and to work on other sections of my site. Well, I just wanted to let you guys know that I'm still planning to do that. I realize that I just got off a(n unplanned) break due to computer issues, so I won't let the break last as long as I had planned to, but it's still going to happen. I'll just want to go through those first 26 Kanto comparisons and touch things up, add a few things here and there (I never got around to providing a translation of the Japanese version of the Rocket-Dan's motto, for example), and make sure everything's in the best shape it can be before heading off to do the next 26 comparisons. I also plan to do some sort of comparison with the first opening theme, but I'm still trying to figure out how I want to present the information and what all to include.
I'm also going to redo that CD Guide during the break to match what I did on this page. Now that I've got all the formatting stuff for that out of the way, getting through it shouldn't be too terribly time consuming.
I'd love to give you guys a time frame for how long this "break from doing comparisons" will last, but I would just end up not following whatever schedule I'd lay out anyway.
In non-site related news, Amazon.com has posted a number of listings for the manga that's coming out at the end of 2009. These include:
Viz's Ani-Manga are basically screenshots
taken from the movies that are then rearranged into comic book panels
and then given word balloons and sound effects to tell the story of the
movie. It's kind of a pointless thing to have if you've ever seen
the actual movie, but I guess it's good for people who want to
experience a book version of the movie who don't own the other manga
retelling of the movie.
My next update will include information on the manga adaptation of the Arceus movie that was included in the latest issue of CoroCoro Comics.

Dogasu @ 07:08 JST -- Pretty big news for any of you who have ever played a Pokemon game ever - the Nintendo Game Boy, the monochormatic portable that featured games like Tetris, Super Mario Land, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, Metroid II: The Return of Samus and some dinky little game named Pokémon, turned twenty years old yesterday. That's right - the little (er...medium-sized) portable that was such a big part of gamers' lives back in the late 80s and early 90s celebrated its 20th birthday yesterday (April 21st)! The Game Boy brand may not be around anymore, but the memories the system's given us will never go away.
Also...was anyone else as confused by the Pokemon comparison Jon Stewart made the other night on The Daily Show as I was?

Dogasu @ 19:45 JST -- Hey guys. I'm almost done with the comparison for "Pokémon Scent-sation," but there are still a few things that I need to do to it before it's ready to be posted. But while I'm on the subject of that episode...what is up with that one girl's face in this shot? The one with the amber-colored hair holding the hose on the very left? Like...are they trying to make that look as wrong as possible or am I just a pervert for thinking so?
Anyway, I've updated the Arceus - To the Conquering of Spacetime page with some new information from the official website. A number of the voice actors have been revealed and some more plot stuff has been announced, so I went in and added all that information in there. I also went ahead and made a page for the soundtracks even though there really isn't much to report at the moment.
I've also updated the DVD Guide with information about the release of the ANA Pokemon short, Pikachu and the Big Ice Adventure. The DVD, which was announced a while ago, will be coming out on June 19th and will feature DP 112, "The Drifting Chronicles of Pikachu and Potchama!" (aka "that Deoxys episode everyone hates").
In other news...the Wii's "Minna no Nintendo Channel" in Japan (simply called the "Nintendo Channel" on the American Wii) is streaming the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon TV special that just aired the other week. They also have a demo for the upcoming game, Pokemon Mysterious Dungeon - Sky Rescue Team, available for download through the channel. The demo was my first time playing anything Mystery Dungeon related, and I have to say...I was not impressed. The whole thing seemed pretty tedious and pointless to me, really, though I'm sure a lack of context was a factor in me feeling that way. The demo has you control Riolu and Pikachu (and, later, Pichu) through three floors of a field-type dungeon.
Neither update will be available for any other Wii Nintendo Channel because...well, non-Japanese translations of the special or the demo don't exist. But who's to say they won't be available once the game comes closer to a North American release?
Finally, I would just like the point out the awesomeness of the Pokemon X-Ray machine.

Dogasu @ 00:00 JST -- Here are a few little tidbits that I've noticed here and there in the past two days.
I've updated the DVD Guide with the episode listing for those Pokémon Elements DVDs. And, as predicted, they're more of those "best of" DVDs. You'd think these things wouldn't be selling all that well (since you can get large portions of the series in box set form), but apparently someone's buying them because Viz keeps making 'em.
Speaking of "Best Of" DVDs, the fifth wave of Best Collection DVDs in Japan has been given a release date of July 14th, 2009. Before we were just given a rather vague "spring/summer 2009," so it's nice to finally have a concrete release date for the discs. The Arceus movie comes out four days later, so I assume the "special feature" these discs are going to have will be a trailer for the movie.
Speaking of the movie, we now know that the ending theme to Arceus - To the Conquering of Spacetime will be a song entitled 心 のアンテナ("Antenna of the Heart"). The song will be performed by Nakagawa Shouko, the girl who's also doing the Notch-Eared Pichu's voice and is also singing the current ending theme for the TV series. She also did Infi's voice in last year's Giratina and the Sky Bouquet, Shami among other things. A single for the song is being released on July 15th, 2009.
The List of Anime Episodes has also been updated with some new Japanese titles. I also included the title for the Mysterious Dungeon special since I feel like it's one of those things that'll get neglected even though it's just as much a part of the animated franchise as anything else. And if you just happened to miss it, AniTele's streaming the special online (Update: Looks like it'll only work for people with Japanese IP addresses). No idea when they'll take it down, though.
In manga news, Viz has uploaded a tiny, tiny image of the English cover for the Giratina and the Sky Warrior manga adaptation.
It's pretty much the exact same as the cover for the Japanese version, so no complaints here. The book comes out May 5th, 2009.
Finally, I wanted to highlight this news story I saw on Kotaku the other day:
Personally, I live like an hour from the Pokemon Center referred to in the article and have never felt the urge to go there. Like...most of the merchandise I'm interested in can be bought in any electronics or book store in Japan, so I don't ever feel the need to go a shop specifically for Pocket Monsters. Plus, I've already been to the one in Nagoya, and let me tell you - the novelty of going to an all-Pokemon store wears off really quickly.
My plan is to start working on the "Pokémon Scent-sation" comparison sometime tomorrow night.
More "Giratina and the Sky Bouquet, Shami" stuff

Dogasu @ 00:10 JST -- I wanted to go ahead and post this before I went to bed even though everything's not *quite* finished yet.
Today, I went into the comparison for "Giratina and the Sky Warrior" and added a few little updates. These updates include information about Shami's "speech" quirk, Regigigas' voice being muted from the dub, and the ending theme to the English version of the movie.
I also went into the page for said movie over in the Movies & Specials Guide and updated everything I could think to update. That's right! No more vague plot summary, no more "we don't know the box office figures because this movie isn't out yet," no more "I have no idea what Mugen will be called in the dub," none of that.
You may notice that the order I have the characters and their voice actors listed on the main page seems a bit nonsensical. Like...why list Todozeruga's VA but not the VA for Satoshi's Hikozaru? The reason is that I copied the voice cast list straight from the movie's end credits, same order and everything. I probably should have listed the others, and I might still do that; but for now, I'll just leave it as is.
I've also created a new page for the various music releases relating to the movie. I'm thinking I'll use the same layout used in that page for the CD Guide when I eventually overhaul that, so any feedback on its look and how easy / difficult it is to find what you want would be greatly appreciated.
There are a few things here and there in that whole Giratina and the Sky Bouquet, Shami section that I want to fine tune / correct, but for the most part, that section seems to be done.
Finally, it seems that the seventh volume of Ihara Shigekatsu's Pokemon DP (aka DP Adventure) will be coming out in Japan on May 28th, 2009. You may remember that in America, the fourth volume's coming out June 2nd, 2009. There's no cover image available at the moment, but when it is posted online, I'll be sure to post it here.
By the way - I got my computer fixed, which means my Kanto comparisons can resume shortly. My goal is to have the comparison for "Pokémon Scent-sation" up not this weekend, but the next one. Fingers crossed.

Dogasu @ 13:27 JST -- I hope you guys liked Dora Buugaranan's Belly. For those of you who missed it, you can check out the archives over in the Features section. I hope that the little site I made there has prompted some of you to track down the Japanese version of Power Rangers - it really is a completely different creature.
Anyway...back to Pocket Monsters.
I've updated the List of Anime Episodes with the two new Japanese titles and four new English titles. "Barry's Busting Out All Over" is a pun on "June's Busting Out All Over" and ends up being a particularly nasty case of rubbing salt in the wound since "June" sounds a lot like "Jun." Like...why would you do that, Pokémon USA? Just to piss us off? It reminds me of how 4Kids teased us by renaming Eusine "Eugene" in "The Legend of Raikou" - it's like the people in charge of naming these characters are telling us that they know that these characters have other names but are telling us to go eff ourselves anyway.
The Video Games section has also been updated with the cover art for the third Mystery Dungeon game as well as the release date for said game. But that's all old news.
The DVD Guide has been updated as well. The Region 2 TV Specials and ANA Shorts page has been updated with two older releases that I had just found out recently; one's a second release of Pikachu's Summer Festival and the other's a release of Pikachu's Winter Vacation. I've also updated the Pokémon DP Battle Dimension page with the cover art for the first two volumes and the box set. No idea why they put Gliscor on the cover, but whatever. Finally, I've added a page for two DVDs that seem to be more of those "Best Of" discs that Viz has been releasing for the past few years. Only this time, the discs won't center around specific pokemon - instead, they'll center around specific pokemon types. Volume One of Pokémon Elements, "Grass," and Volume Two, "Fire," are set to be released on July 28th, 2009.
I'll try to get an actual content update in within the next week or so.

Foreigners in 2008?
Yes, yes it was. Travel guide and research site TripAdvisor.com ranked the most popular places for foreign travelers last year. There's loads of things for them to see: temples, shrines and Pokémon. Here's the top twenty hot spots foreign travelers wanted to visit in 2008: ...drumroll please... 20. Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden (Tokyo) For foreigners, The Pokémon Center is number three WITH A BULLET. For those who don't know what The Pokémon Center is, it's an official retail shop, selling loads of official Pokémon goodies. It's not just in Tokyo — there are locations across Japan: Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, Yokohama and Sapporo. TripAdvisor even breaks the data down to what's popular among different nationalities (Americans, Germans, Spain, Italians, British and French). Which countries loved the Pokémon Center so much they put it in their top five? The Americas and the French at number 3 and number 4, respectively. |
