There are several versions of Toshihiro
Ono's Den-geki!
Pikachu comic released over
the years.
CoroCoro Comics Special (Japanese) The comic as it originally ran in the magazine CoroCoro Comics Special (別冊コロコロコミックSpecial), a bi-monthly off-shoot of the original CoroCoro Comics (コロコロコミック). The magazine version is arguably the most difficult version of this series to find as old issues of CoroCoro Comics Special are very rarely ever found on online auction sites or used book stores. Graphic Novel collections (Japanese) This is the version of the series where chapters from CoroCoro Comics Special are collected into graphic novel format. As is common with many other comic series that get collected into graphic novel format, this version contains various art and text alterations not seen in the CoroCoro Comics Special originals. Those art edits include adding additional shading and other details not found in the magazine version, adding new panels and/or new pages, and making miscellaneous other tweaks to the art. Text changes tend to mostly include minor things like changing a word written in hiragana so that it's written in katakana (or vice-versa), though some other rewrites (i.e. Kasumi's age in Chapter 2) pop up from time to time as well. Single Comic Book Issues (English) When Viz brought this series over to the U.S. they initially released it as a series of American-style standalone comic books. The Japanese graphic novel, rather than the CoroCoro Comics Special original, seems to have been used as the basis for Viz's translation. Common edits made to these include flipping all the artwork to make the series read from left to right instead of from right to left as well as numerous edits to the artwork to reduce women's breast sizes, alter characters' revealing outfits, and remove some of the series' more risqué moments. Graphic Novel collections (English) Graphic novel collections of Viz's single comic book issues. These contain additional edits not found in the monthly comic book issue releases. On this page we'll be looking at the changes made to each of these different versions.
