Dogasu's Backpack | DVD Guide | Pokémon Orange Islands

The Orange Island DVD's weren't released until around the time the Johto League Champions DVD's were released.  It was decided that, instead of sticking to Viz's three-episodes a DVD plan, that they would cram as many episodes onto each disc as possible to hasten the release of the season.

The result is that we get thirty-six episodes spread across three discs.  With twelve episodes crammed onto each disc, the video quality suffers tremendously, as Chris Beveridge's review on AnimeOnDVD.com relates:

...putting twelve episodes on a DVD has an effect. The encoding has suffered quite a bit. While I was watching some of the episodes, I kept thinking it looked better when I saw the episodes on cable. Macro blocking is very evident in dark blues, grey/silver, and extends into light browns. The picture looks dark also. While this is a great deal, you are paying for less quality.
Despite these flaws, the discs are still a great deal, and you'll be hard-pressed to find any anime-related DVD's that contain so many episodes.

There is currently no VHS equivalent of these DVD's, and there don't seem to be any planned for the moment.
