Pocket Monsters Green (ポケットモンスター緑) is a
video game for the Game Boy. It was released in Japan on February
26th,
1996.
![]() Pocket
Monsters Green is a
role-playing game (RPG) set in a modern-day setting, much like the Mother games. In it, you
play as a young boy going around the land of Kanto trying to collect
and raise mysterious creatures known as "pockemon" (from Pocket Monsters). Together with your
party of monsters, you travel from city to city and challenge other
characters with teams of pockemon known as "Gym Leaders." After
defeating eight of these Gym Leaders, you are given access to the
prestigious Pockemon League. Along the way, you'll encounter an
evil organization known as the Rocket-Dan and must thwart their various
schemes to steal pockemon.
One of the features that sets Pocket Monsters apart from other games in the genre is the ability to trade pockemon using the Game Boy link cable. There are 151 pockemon, yet all of them are not available on any one cart through normal play. In order to complete your bestiary, you have to trade with a player who has a copy of Pocket Monsters Red for the pockemon not available in your Pocket Monsters Green cart. Players are also able to battle each other using their party of collected pockemon. All of this gives Pocket Monsters a social element not found in other single player RPGs.
A list of the 151 pockemon featured in the
games can be found here, while a
list of the various
attacks they can use can be found here.
An overview of the world of the Pocket
Monsters games is here,
and a list of the items used in the games can be found here.
The games have been best-sellers for Nintendo and have been adapted into manga, a trading card game, and an animated series. Unfortunately, there do not seem to be any plans to bring these games to North America, but I'll be sure to update this space as soon as there's any news of an English language release! |
