The Digimon franchise is unique in that it's a franchise aimed at little kids that doesn't assign American names to each and every human character.  A lot of the characters keep their Japanese names, something that's unheard of for a made-for-TV dub in the early 2000s.

However, not every character gets to keep his or her Japanese name when the series is dubbed into English.  Below is a list of characters' Japanese and English names, as well as some additional notes about their names.

Digimon Adventure

English Name
Japanese Name
Notes
Taichi "TAI" Kamiya
Yagami Taichi
Yagami, when written out in kanji, is 八神.  If you reverse the kanji, however (神八 instead of 八神), you get "Kamiya."  Taichi's family name in the English version is most likely a misreading of his kanji.
Takenouchi Sora
Takeno'uchi Sora
N/A
Yamato "MATT" Ishida
Ishida Yamato
Yamato has a different family name from his brother (Taka'ishi Takeru) because their parents got a divorce when they were little.
Koushiro "IZZY" Izumi
Izumi Koushirou
The spelling of his name in the English version does not express the long o sound at the end of his name.
Mimi Tachikawa
Tachikawa Mimi
N/A
Takeru "T.K." Takaishi
Taka'ishi Takeru
Takeru has a different family name from his brother (Ishida Yamato) because their parents got a divorce when they were little.
Joe Kido
Kido Jou
"Joe" is an Americanized form of the Japanese name "Jou."
Gennai
Gennai
In the Japanese version, his name is pronounced with a hard g sound (like in "good").  In the English version, his name is pronounced with a soft g sound (like in "gentle").
