This film was first announced at the closing ceremony of the 2026 Pokémon World Championships event in California, USA.

This is the first animated Pocket Monsters movie to not have the words "Pocket Monsters" in its title since 2019's Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution. It is also the first film to incorporate the international "Pokémon" logo as part of its own movie logo.

At the time of its release it will have been roughly seven years since the last animated Pocket Monsters movie hit theaters.
