![]() Pocket Monsters Special 44 (ポケットモンスターSPECIAL 44)
is the 44th volume of Pocket
Monsters Special and the
first full volume of the BW Chapter.
Volume Information
From the creators
White is a young employee of the BW Agency
who is in charge of finding whatever pokemon her clients need for their
films and delivering them to the set. While going over the day's
work with her current client, the two of them notice Black in the
background of one of their shots. As the assistant director tells
him to get out of the way, White finds out that the director of this
commercial had requested two Pokabu, not just one! Suddenly,
members of
the film crew start to lose consciousness! Everyone immediately
blames Black since he's the only person they don't know, forcing the
young trainer to begin work on clearing his name. He eventually
discovers that a trap set by a wild Dentula is to blame! At
the end of the ensuing battle, Pokabu produces a fire attack that fries
both
Dentula and all the filmmaker's expensive camera equipment! After
apologizing to the film crew, White tells Black
that he's going to become her employee and work until he's finished
paying off his debt. Off in the distance, a young man watches the
young trainers and
cries as he sees pokemon being exploited by humans.
Notes I do not own the Japanese version of this chapter, so I cannot confirm that the chapter known as "Lights, Camera...Action!" in the English version was actually printed in the December 2010 issue of Shougaku Yon-Nensei. The "unconfirmed" will remain up there by the chapter's title until I can actually get a copy of this magazine in my hands and confirm this for myself. White's Pokabu is named Bubu-chan (ぶぶちゃん). The doko da doko da (どこだどこだ) and asoko da (あそこだ) in the first two panels of the chapter are parodying the phrase uttered by the villains from the 1972 live action superhero series Android Kikaider. The sound effect that's shown when Musha attaches itself to Black's head, setappu (せたっぷ) was meant to be an homage to the same sound heard during Rider X's transformation scenes in the TV series Kamen Rider X. However, it seems as if the manga staff was mistaken; the sound effect is actually from Riderman, not Kamen Rider X. Differences between the magazine version and the graphic novel version Three
pages are added to the beginning of the chapter showing Yakon
discovering the Light Stone, an event that was only mentioned in the
magazine version.

Black and White's Pokabu have just
finished their first shoot together! After White thanks Black for
lending her his pokemon, she explains how he still has quite a way to
go before he's finished paying off the camera equipment destroyed in
the incident with the wild Dentula. Before going to bed for the
night, she gives Black a free Live Caster she received from her
previous client. Suddenly, the area where the two had pitched a
tent comes under attack! Black uses Musha to determine that the
attackers are a group of Dokkora using giant wooden beams to makes
holes in the ground. At that moment, two members of a group known
as the Plasma-Dan appear and take responsibility for the pokemon's
actions. They explain that they have a permit to build a stage in
the area and offer to help the two move to another location. The
next day,
a member of the Plasma-Dan named G'Cis takes the stage. He
delivers a speech telling the people of Karakusa Town to "liberate
their
pokemon" and to stop treating them as if they're tools. When the
speech is over, the townspeople actually do what he says and start
releasing their pokemon.
Differences between the magazine version and the graphic novel version Unfortunately,
I do not have the magazine version of this chapter.

Black is shocked to see that so many trainers have been convinced by G'Cis' lecture and are actually releasing their pokemon! He runs off to put a stop to their speeches, forcing White to chase after him. On the way, Black reveals that he captured the Dentula that was causing havoc at the production shoot the other day. Based on the way the pokemon acts, he guesses that it, too, was abandoned by its trainer after hearing the Plasma-Dan's speech. White separates from Black to check in with her boss and finds out that their potential client decided to go with another agency instead. As White curses herself for not putting her career before Black, she begins to think about how little she actually knows about him. When she catches up with her employee, she finds him in the middle of a pokemon battle! Black's opponent is a young man who had suddenly attacked him for not being able to "hear" his pokemon. Black prepares his Wargle to face off against the trainer's team of Choroneko, Mamepato, Otamaro, and Dotekkotsu. Elsewhere, G'Cis, surrounded by members of the Plasma-Dan, is told that their "king" is fighting a young trainer in Karakusa Town. Notes Each of the magazines that print Pocket Monsters Special writes up a short one or two sentence summary of the previous issue's chapter and prints them off to the side. In the summary that accompanies the February 2011 chapter, it mistakenly refers to the Plasma-Dan as the Purachina-Dan (プラチナ団), or the "Platinum-Dan." Click on the image below to view the mistake. The text on the biker's jacket is an homage to the film Goddo Supiido Yuu! BLACK EMPEROR (ゴッ ド・スピード・ユー! BLACK EMPEROR), or "God Speed You! Black Emperor." The look of the character is supposedly based on a member of the Canadian rock group of the same name - most likely Efrim Menuck - but no confirmation as to which band member he was based on has been made. The young man who's fighting Black is revealed to be N, the king of the Plasma-Dan! As the battle continues, N berates Black for for relying on tools like Monster Balls and Pokemon Zukan to communicate with his pokemon. Black asks White to help him out, but she replies by saying she's never participated in a pokemon battle in her life! As the one-on-one battle continues, Black explains that he uses tools like his Pokemon Zukan to learn more about his pokemon and develop stronger bonds with them. He decides to show N what he means, so he has Pokabu take on his Otamaro head-on. Much to N's surprise, Pokabu is able to withstand the Water-type pokemon's attacks and win! N is impressed with how Black was able to convey his hopes to his pokemon and calls and end to the battle, saying he now has a new riddle to solve. As N leaves, Black tells White that his Mun'na was able to eat a part of N's dream during the scuffle. After looking at it, they discover that he's been living peacefully with pokemon ever since he was young. Could N really be a nice guy after all? Bel and Cheren arrive in Sanyou City, hoping to catch up with Black. They eventually arrive at the restaurant he's at and are told all about White and how Black is now working for her agency. Before Black can explain why he's now her employee, triplet waiters named Dent, Corn, and Pod approach the table. Black tells his friends that the restaurant they're in is really the Sanyou City Gym and that the waiters are the Gym Leaders. The triplets pull back a curtain and reveal a stage on which large buttons representing Water, Fire, and Grass-type attacks are present. Above that is a second curtain with the Water-type symbol. The Gym Leaders announce that Black and his friends will have to jump on the button representing the attack that's super effective against the one on the curtain in order to make it to the battlefield in the back of the gym. After Black gives his friends a crash course on type compatibility, the trio of friends make their way through a number of these challenges. Eventually, the three answer all the problems correctly and are allowed to begin their three on three battle with the Sanyou City Gym Leaders. The Sanyou City Gym Battle has begun! Unfortunately for the challengers, the Gym Leaders have lined their pokemon up in a way that pits them against the pokemon they're weak against! The Gym Leaders launch attack after attack until, finally, Cheren's Tsutarja faints. At that moment, Black remembers that their pokemon don't necessarily have to attack the pokemon directly in front of them. Bel steps forward and has her Mijumaru surprise Pod's Baopp by defeating it with its hotachi! Dent quickly counterattacks with his Yanapp and easily knocks out Bel's Mijumaru. Black's Pokabu tries its best to fight off the remaining pokemon by itself, but Corn's Hiyapp knocks it back with a powerful Water Gun attack. The Gym Leaders are about to claim victory when Pokabu revives its teammates with leaves that had fallen from Yanapp's head. The battle's thirty minute time limit is up, and since Black and his friends have the most pokemon standing, they're all declared the winners! The Gym Leaders admit defeat and give their opponents the Tri Badge. Later, Black gives Cheren and Bel Live Casters so they can keep in contact with each other and then rejoins White on his journey through the Isshu region. Black feels like he's on top of the world as his Pokabu defeats another wild pokemon. As he celebrates, his Mun'na wanders off. Suddenly, an unknown assailant attacks Black! When he comes to, he finds himself in the laboratory of Makomo-Hakase, one of Araragi-Hakase's friends from college. When Black announces that he needs to leave to go search for Mun'na, Makomo-Hakase decides to help him out since she just happens to need a Mun'na for her research on dream energy. Their search eventually leads them to the Site of Dreams. Inside, Black can spot members of the Plasma-Dan holding his pokemon captive! He tries to enter the abandoned factory to stop them, but the mysterious attacker from before prevents him from advancing. Luckily, Mun'na is able to wrestle itself free and attach itself to Black's head, enabling him to deduce that his opponent is a Meeruhog. Now that he can see his foe, Black sends all his pokemon out to take care of it. The Plasma-Dan grunts leave, promising to report what they saw to G'Cis. After the battle, Makomo-Hakase gathers some of Mun'na's "dream smoke." Black and White bid their new friend farewell as they head toward the next town. Differences
