| Manga Guide | Den-geki! Pikachu
Satoshi's leaving the Navel Gym after earning his third Orange League badge when he suddenly rejoins his old traveling companion Kasumi! The two are on the way to Yuzu Island, the site of Satoshi’s final gym challenge, when they end up rescuing the Gym Leader's younger sister, Marie, from the clutches of a thrashing whirlpool. Marie thanks her saviors by guiding them to the Yuzu Gym. There, her older brother Ziggy makes a shocking announcement; he's decided to take Kasumi as his bride! Satoshi ignores all that and remains focused on his original goal, successfully completing both the target practice and dance-off portions of the gym challenge. This grants him access to a three-on-three Pokémon battle with Ziggy to determine both his ability to join the Orange League and Kasumi’s future! Ziggy wins round one when his Eleboo showers Satoshi’s Pikachu with a flurry of Thunder Punches, but Satoshi claims the victory in round two when his Fusigidane uses Sleep Powder to knock out Ziggy's Nassy. The third and final round pits Satoshi's Zenigame against Ziggy's Starmie. The Gym Leader's Pokémon surprises Satoshi with a Thunderbolt attack but Zenigame is able to shake it off and defeat its opponent with a combination of Hydro Pump and Skull Bash. Satoshi wins the Gym Badge and Kasumi’s freedom but Marie is sad Kasumi isn't going to become her big sister after all! Ziggy comes up with a brilliant (?) solution: he’ll dress up as a woman and become Marie’s big sister instead…!?
Each issue of CoroCoro Special has a page in the back featuring short one or two sentence comments from the authors of each of the manga featured in that month's issue. Below is a translation of Toshihiro Ono's comment from the issue in which this chapter was printed:
In Japan, there was a one day gap between the publication of this manga chapter and the debut of the TV episode on which it was based.
In the U.S., there was an approximately seven month gap between the release of Viz's version of the manga chapter and the debut of the English dub of the TV episode on which it was based.
Neither Kenji nor the Rocket trio appear in the manga version of this story.
Various aspects of the beginning of the episode are completely different depending on which version you're looking at:
In the TV series, the badge Satoshi gets from Ziggy is his third of four Orange League badges, but in the comic adaptation it's apparently his last one. This implies Manga Satoshi faced the Orange Islands gyms in a different order from Animated Series Satoshi. In the comic version, Ziggy outright proposes to Kasumi while in the animated series he merely flirts with her. ![]() Satoshi and Ziggy have a dance off in the comic adaptation that doesn't occur in the TV episode. In the animated series Satoshi discovers Zenigame's ability to use its Hydro Pump attack on accident. In the comic version, however, Satoshi is apparently already aware his Zenigame knows the attack and so he orders his Pokémon to use it directly. The ending of the story's completely different in both versions. In the animated series Ziggy hands over the Gym Badge, Marie accepts the loss, and Satoshi and his friends go along on their way. In the comic adaptation, Marie starts to cry since this loss means she'll never get a big sister now, and so Ziggy takes it upon himself to dress up as a woman to become the big sister Marie has always wanted. The story ends with Satoshi and Kasumi wondering if ending the chapter like this is OK.
Title Page The title page from the CoroCoro Special version is repurposed as the title page of the fourth graphic novel as a whole.
Accordingly, a brand new title page is created specifically for the graphic novel collection.
Graphic Novel Pages 31-33 A three page "cold opening" is added to the graphic novel version.
CoroCoro Special Page 31, Graphic Novel Page 37 Panel 1 onwards: The dress Marie''s wearing is plain white in the original magazine version but gets updated to a more graphic design for the collected version. This edit will take place in every panel this dress appears in from here on out.
CoroCoro Special Page 34, Graphic Novel Page 40 Panel 3: There's a slight dialogue change.
CoroCoro Special Page 38, Graphic Novel Page 44 Panel 3: Text below Satoshi's crotch is added to the graphic novel version.
CoroCoro Special Page 45, Graphic Novel Page 51 Panel 6: Satoshi ordering "Quick Attack" is changed for the graphic novel version. In the magazine version it's written out in kanji (電光石火) but in the collected edition it's written out in hiragana (でんこうせっか). This change was probably made to better match the way the attack names are spelled in the video games. CoroCoro Special Page 46, Graphic Novel Page 52 Panel 3: Some extra shading is added to Ziggy's Eleboo for the collected version.
CoroCoro Special Page 49, Graphic Novel Page 55 Panel 6: Similar to "Quick Attack" earlier in the chapter, Satoshi's order to use "Sleep Powder" is changed from kanji (眠り粉) to hiragana (ねむりごな) for the graphic novel release. CoroCoro Special Page 55, Graphic Novel Page 61 Panel One: "Skull Bash" is changed from kanji (ロケット頭突) to hiragana (ロケットずつき).
The Viz version uses the CoroCoro Special magazine version of this chapter as its base. The initial comic book release Viz put out does not include the new "cold opening" pages added for the Japanese graphic novel but the Viz graphic novel collection that came out a few months later does. Chapter Wide The English dub episode "Misty Meets Her Match" had not come out when the initial comic book version of this chapter was released and so Viz came up with a number of brand new localized names for several of the characters/locations featured in this chapter. These names were later updated to the same ones 4Kids used when the chapter was collected in the graphic novel about six months later. Yuzu Island, known as "Trovita Island" in the animated series, is called "Citron Island" in the comic book.
(A single panel, however, keeps the "Citron Island" naming even in the graphic novel collection). Marie, who would eventually be known as "Mahri" in the 4Kids English dub, gets called "Mary" in the initial comic book release.
Ziggy, who goes by "Rudy" in the English dub, is called "Jeremy" in the comic version.
Viz Graphic Novel Page 40 Panel 7: When Kasumi's criticizing Satoshi's fashion choices, she mentions his clothes are "yellow and blue" (イエローアンドブルー). In Viz's version Misty says they're "pink and blue" instead. Viz Graphic Novel Page 41 Panel 4: Kasumi mentions they haven't seen each other "in a while" (しばらく会わないうちにキャラ変わったわね、あんた) in the Japanese original. In the Viz localization this gets changed to the somewhat more specific "I leave you on your own for a month and look at you."
