In Japanese schools, lunch is generally not eaten in a cafeteria; it's usually served in the classroom, with the actual food itself being distributed by the students of said classroom. One student might be put in charge of passing out trays, another student might be put in charge of ladling the stew into each bowl, one student might be in charge of passing out the eating utensils, etc. These roles are generally assigned on a rotating basis so that every student in the class eventually gets to perform each task.
