Dogasu's Backpack | Rants | Happy Anniversary! (Year Three)

Another year, another candle to add to the birthday cake.

Yup, this website's third birthday is today, January 31st, 2003.  Wow, it just amazes me that it's only been three years because I swear it doesn't feel like it.  It feels like it was just yesterday that my non-HTML-knowing self started working on a webpage without very much content at all.  I may not have advanced much in my ability to make snazzy-looking web pages, but I have managed to add a whole lot of stuff to this site.

2002 was a big year.  The fifth movie premiered in Japan, while we got a horribly-advertised and strangely dubbed fourth movie.  The Jouto episodes in Japan finally ended, and the superior in many ways Advanced Generation started.  Meanwhile, in America, we finally got past the horrible fourth season of the anime and are now getting the good episodes.  Cartoon Network started airing the first season in order, and promises of new things made us eager for the new year to come.  The year was a blast, and the promising year looks to be just as eventful.

As far as this site goes, a lot has happened in this past year.  The big thing for me was the move back to the envy webspace (I plan to never go back to Geocities ever again) and the upgrading of my account.  It seems that my site got to the point where it was popular enough that visitors were using up all of the allotted bandwidth, so I had to go and buy extra bandwidth.  I never thought I'd have so many people visiting my site that I would need to pay to keep the site from locking them out, so I thought that was pretty cool.  The site also got a lot of updates in the various sections, and I'm pretty pleased with the amount of content I've been able to put up.  I got a bunch of new Episode Comparisons up, 31 by my count.  I redid the Pokémon's Bios and Humans' Bios sections, and I think they look a lot better than their older versions.  I got rid of the seemed-like-a-good-idea-at-the-time Anime Section, and I was forced to quit the Manga Releases table when Viz stopped releasing any new manga.  And then, of course, there's the new layout that I'm working on as I write this rant.

So what's in store for this site?  Well, there will be plenty of newsworthy items, such as the fifth movie coming out over here and the sixth movie coming out in Japan.  We'll also have the new Game Boy Advance games coming out in America, so I'll have plenty of news to work with.  I plan to get about 50 more Episode Comparisons, and I hope to finish the revision of the Human's Bios section.  And, of course, there are going to be other updates that are too numerous to list, but I'll just say that there's plenty to come in the next year.  You know that Toonami thing where Tom was talking about how they're still dedicated to being the best in action cartoon programming, and how they'll have plenty of new things coming down the pipe?  Well, think of my site like that...well, except for the computer-generated robot part.  And I don't have a talking femmebot.  The site will have new things coming, and lots of stuff that should make you all happy.  Things will only get better and better.  That's definite.  The femmebot, on the other hand...eh, I'll get back to you on that one...

So that's a fairly optimistic vision, huh?  Well, to be honest, I think I have to be in order to avoid the "three year curse."  What am I talking about?  Well, it seems that the average lifespan of a website is three years, and after that the average webmaster shuts down his/her site.  I mean, there aren't that many websites out there that are older than that, now are there?  But I wanna be different.  Well, I mean, I'm already different, calling everyone by their Japanese names and talking about aspects of the franchise that most other websites might devote a sentence to.  But I want to be a different kind of different, if that makes any sense.  I plan to have this website running for as long as I'm able to keep it running, and nothing short of a herd of rampaging monkeys will make me shut this site down.  So for those of you worrying, don't.  This site isn't going to explode one day and come back with nothing but a link to a farewell editorial.  I'm in it for the long run now.

Right now, it's about 11pm on the 31st of January, and this rant should have been up 23 hours ago.  While I can't do anything about it now, I'm gonna make sure that my next anniversary write-up is up on time.
