Chapter One

48 pages
Some time ago, a young trainer with a Reshiram took down the Plasma-Dan, an organization dedicated to separating all pokemon from their trainers.  This trainer's actions brought peace back to the Isshu Region...for a while.

Later, in a forest in the southwestern part of the Isshu Region near Hiougi City, a young boy named Arata (アラタ) is on the run.  He turns to a pokemon we can't quite see yet and assures it that everything will be OK.  As he looks around nervously, he spots a young boy named Cheren and ducks behind a tree.  After telling him to come out and getting no response, Cheren has his Daikenki use its Shell Blade to chop down the tree he's hiding behind.  Now that their hiding place has been removed, Cheren notices that Arata is running around with is the legendary pokemon Keldeo!

Arata explains that a group of bad guys are after the Keldeo and that he's taken it upon himself to protect it.  Even though he's not quite a pokemon trainer yet and is someone who gets scared easily, Arata wants to do everything he can to protect the legendary pokemon.  Keldeo is a bit of a scaredy cat itself, he says, and so the two of them were able to form a special bond very quickly.  After assuring Arata that he has no intentions of trying to capture Keldeo, Cheren tells him that he's in the forest to look for his friend.  Some electrical waves in the area are jamming his communicator, making him think that Zekrom is in the area.  And if Zekrom is around, he figures, his friend can't be too far behind.

Suddenly, a bolt of lightning rains down from the sky!  Cheren thinks Zekrom has arrived, but when the smoke clears, he sees that it was only the work of a Shiburudon!  Just then, two members of the Plasma-Dan appear!   Cheren demands to know what they're up to, and the unnamed grunts respond by saying they're out to capture a couple of new legendary pokemon that nobody's ever seen before.  They'll then use their power to make the world theirs.

But first, they want to capture the Keldeo that Arata's been protecting!  Cheren challenges the grunts to a battle with his Daikenki.  Their Shiburudon uses Discharge to send an electrical current creeping along the ground, but both Cheren and Daikenki are able to jump out of its range.
At that moment, Cheren realizes that the Shiburudon is the cause of the electrical interference in the area.  He has Daikenki retaliate with Aqua Jet and is actually able to deliver some significant damage.

The Plasma-Dan grunts see that they're no match for Cheren's Daikenki despite the type advantage, so they decide to target the defenseless Arata and Keldeo instead.  When the Plasma-Dan's pokemon finally fires off its Zap Cannon attack, Cheren and Daikenki dive in front of Arata and Keldeo and take the full force of the attack!  With Cheren and Daikenki now unable to battle, Arata is the only person left who can protect Keldeo!

The normally cowardly Arata puts aside his fears and commands Keldeo to fight.  As Shiburudon charges up another Zap Cannon attack, Arata realizes that Keldeo is a Water-Type pokemon and has it copy the Aqua Jet attack he saw it use earlier.  It uses the technique to move in close and headbutt Shiburudon with its horn.

This knocks Shiburudon's head back, causing it to shoot the Electric-Type attack into the air.  Just as it seems as though the attack's been sent flying off, the ball of electricity falls back down and slams into both Arata and Keldeo!

The two Plasma-Dan grunts move in to nab the unconscious legendary when they're stopped by a tornado of fire!  When the smoke clears, they see that their attacker is an Emboar.  Just then, everyone looks up and sees a boy flying toward them on top of his Reshiram!  The boy is Hiro (ヒロ), Cheren's friend who broke up the Plasma-Dan not too long ago!  The grunts see the legendary pokemon and flee, knowing that there's no way they'll ever be able to win against that.  As Cheren berates him for not keeping in touch, Hiro introduces himself to Arata and tells him to become a strong Pokemon Trainer someday.

Two years later, a lot has changed in the Isshu region.  Cheren is now a Gym Leader, Keldeo is seen watching over a prairie with a group of Yorterrie, Bel is now Araragi-Hakase's assistant, and a woman named Homika is now a Gym Leader.  In Hiougi City, an older Arata prepares to leave on his journey.  With his new Pokemon Zukan in his bag, the young trainer sets out to receive his first pokemon!

On top of the lookout in Hiougi City, Arata agonizes over which starter pokemon to choose.  Bel, Araragi-Hakase's assistant, reminds Arata that he's been standing there for half a day and that he really should hurry up and decide already.  Arata believes this is too big a decision for him to rush through and continues to take his time.

At that moment, the two Plasma-Dan grunts who attacked Arata two years earlier approach him and offer to make things easier for him by taking all three pokemon out of his hands!  The duo rushes our heroes, kicks Arata in the face, and then grabs the container holding the Monster Balls from Bel's arms!  Luckily, Arata is able to swipe one of the stolen Monster Balls back as he reels from the grunts' attack.  "At least I was able to protect -one- of them," thinks Arata.

Suddenly, a young woman named Homika appears and uppercuts the Plasma duo away!  As the two of them are sent flying off into the distance, the remaining two Monster Balls fall into Homika's outreached hand.  When Arata thanks her and asks for the pokemon back, she refuses, saying that a rookie who wasn't even able to protect three measly pokemon doesn't have the qualifications necessary to take care of -any- of them.  Arata insists that he does, so Homika suggests they settle their score with a pokemon battle.  She tells him to use the one pokemon he actually -was- able to protect from the Plasma-Dan and says that if he doesn't win, he'll have to give up on becoming a Pokemon Trainer and go back home!  During all this, Bel wonders where she's seen this woman before.

Homika takes care of the Plasma-Dan grunts

Arata throws the Monster Ball and discovers that the pokemon he rescued was a Mijumaru!  Homika sends out her Dogas and wastes no time in ordering it to use Venom Shock to send a large amount of toxic gunk toward its opponent.  Luckily, Mijumaru trips and falls out of the attack's range at the last minute, saving it from what would have been a one-hit KO.

Dogas' attack narrowly misses its target

At that moment, Bel remembers that this woman is Homika, a singer and Pokemon Trainer from Tachiwaki City!  Homika says that she gives 100% to both singing and battling and asks Arata if he does the same to everything he does.  Before he can respond, she tells him that she doesn't think he does because she can't sense the "heart" in him needed to be a proper Pokemon Trainer.

Homika gives it her all

Suddenly, acid from Dogas' earlier attack begins to eat through a light pole and threatens to fall right on top of Mijumaru!  Arata jumps in at the last minute and shields his partner from the falling metal, saving the pokemon from being seriously injured.  As Arata picks himself up, he tells Mijumaru that his goal is to become as strong and cool a trainer as the Reshiram trainer he met two years before.  He's decided that he'll need to fight alongside pokemon to achieve this goal and that and that he'll eventually get himself some legendary pokemon someday!  Mijumaru becomes fired up by Arata's new resolve and charges into battle.

Arata protects Mijumaru

Dogas fires off another Venom Shock, so Mijumaru responds with a continuous barrage of Water Guns.  The water attacks push Mijumaru away from Dogas' sludge, enabling it to close the distance between itself and its opponent at an amazing speed.  Once Mijumaru gets in close, Dogas begins to surround itself with a ring of poison liquid.  Mijumaru uses Water Gun on the ground to propel itself out of Dogas' range and then gives it its all in one final Water Gun attack.  The spray of water slams Dogas into the ground, knocking it unconscious.

The final showdown

Homika concedes defeat and tells Arata that she'll be sure to battle him seriously the next time she sees him.  Arata doesn't know what she means by "next time," so she tells him that she's the Gym Leader at the Tachiwaki Gym!  After Homika returns the Monster Balls to Bel, Araragi-Hakase's assistant approaches Arata and asks him if he's decided which starter pokemon to go with.  Arata picks up the Mijumaru who had fought alongside him and says that he has.

A Mareep trainer and a Koduck trainer watch as a purple monster makes quick work of their pokemon.  Before long, the two trainers take their pokemon and run screaming from the valley.

After capturing a Riolu in a city somewhere in the Isshu region, Arata and his Mijumaru walk through the streets with a smile on their faces.  Suddenly, they stumble across a bunch of injured pokemon stretched out on blankets in the middle of the street!  As nurses run around tending to their patients, Arata learns that this was all the work of a mysterious pokemon over in Fossil Valley (化石の谷).

Unknown to Arata, a man named Dr. Zeno is spying on him.

Fossil Valley

In Fossil Valley, the two Plasma-Dan grunts are setting up a trap to capture the mysterious pokemon.  The taller grunt reads a placard stating that this valley was carved out when a river flowed through it and that it is now home to a large number of pokemon fossils.  Suddenly, the grunts' trap snaps shut!  When they lift the basket, the grunts find both Arata and Mijumaru fighting over the Berry that had been placed there as bait!  The two intruders are quickly tied up.

Suddenly, a figure that is later identified as Genosect rapidly approaches the group!  The short grunt calls on his Habunake and prepares for battle.  The purple pokemon opens its eyes wide and begins to analyze Habunake.  When it's finished, an aura light begins to surround the mysterious pokemon.

Analyzing...

As Arata wonders what this pokemon is, Dr. Zeno appears out of nowhere and identifies it as Genosect.  The legendary pokemon fires a beam of energy from its cannon, hitting Habunake and causing a huge explosion.  When the smoke clears, Habunake is pinned under a fallen stalactite, unable to move.

The shorter grunt wants to hurry up and return Habunake to its Monster Ball but he can't because the explosion knocked it to the other side of the cavern!  Habunake tries to escape on its own, but Genosect steps on the fallen rock to prevent it from getting free.  Arata thinks it's horrible that Genosect wants to continue the fight when Habunake clearly wants to retreat, but Dr. Zeno says that Genosect won't stop because it was created solely for fighting. At that moment, it prepares to fire another shot from its cannon.

Attacking while Habunake is down

Arata begins to pull at the ropes binding Mijumaru with his teeth.  The Water-Type pokemon breaks free, so it begins to attack Genosect.  Its opponent scans Mijumaru and makes its body harder to deflect its hotachi, rendering it useless.  As the fight continues, Arata frees himself and runs over to help Habunake.  Genosect turns to Arata mid-battle and fires its cannon, but the young trainer is able to dodge its attacks and grabs Habunake's Monster Ball.  The Plasma-Dan grunts are moved to tears at the sight of their enemy working so hard to save their pokemon.

Arata throws Habunake's Monster Ball back to its trainer, enabling him to recall it.  Next, he stands up to Genosect and prepares to settle things.  He has Mijumaru strike the ground with its Shell Blade attack, breaking it open and sending the water from the underground river spewing up like a geyser!  This creates a "curtain of water" that prevents Genosect from being able to analyze its opponent properly.  Arata uses this opportunity to call out his Riolu and surprise Genosect with a Force Palm attack, knocking it back.

Attacking through the "curtain of water"

Arata readies a Monster Ball.  Right as he's about to throw it at the pokemon, Dr. Zeno grabs his arm and tells him that he can't allow him to capture it.  Genosect gathers up its energy and flies away, so Arata yells at Dr. Zeno for preventing him from getting such a strong pokemon.  The doctor says that it's just too powerful, adding that if Genosect was allowed to leave that valley, the entire Isshu region would be in danger.  This only makes Arata want to capture it more.

Genosect's too strong

Arata turns to Dr. Zeno and asks him why he seems to know so much about Genosect in the first place.  Dr. Zeno reveals that it's because he's the ex-Plasma-Dan scientist who revived Genosect from a fossil!

Chapter Four

At Fossil Valley, Arata is shocked to learn that Dr. Zeno used to be a member of the Plasma-Dan.  He thinks back to all the injured pokemon at the Pokemon Center and deduces that he was the one who ordered Genosect to hurt all of them!  Dr. Zeno decides that he's done talking with Arata and has his two Gigearl use their Screech attack to incapacitate both Arata and his Mijumaru.  When they come to, they see that Dr. Zeno has fled.

Dr. Zeno returns to his laboratory where Genosect is waiting for him.  He plugs in the data from Genosect's latest battles into a console and watches as a newly created "Lightning Cassette" emerges from one of the machine's chambers.  Meanwhile, Arata and Mijumaru have somehow found their way into the laboratory.  The two make their way to the lab's main room and confront Dr. Zeno and his creation.  Dr. Zeno welcomes the opportunity for another battle; after all, Genosect becomes stronger the more it fights!

The battle starts with Arata's Mijumaru evolving into Futachimaru!  Arata recognizes the Techno Buster technique that Genosect begins to charge up from but notices that something's different from when it used it back at Fossil Valley.  When the technique is launched, it appears to be an Electric-Type attack that deals a great deal of damage to Futachimaru!  Dr. Zeno explains that by using a variety of "cassettes," he's able to change the type of Genosect's Techno Buster technique at will.

Next, Arata calls on his Riolu.  Arata's pokemon evolves into Lucario and is able to land a few attacks but is also swatted away like an insect.

Dr. Zeno takes this lull in the battle to explain how he was cast out of the Plasma-Dan for conducting what the organization called "unnatural research."  As Genosect continues to attack Lucario, Dr. Zeno proclaims that his creation will show the organization that his research was worth doing after all.

Genosect fires another Techno Buster technique.  Futachimaru uses Aqua Jet to both dodge the attack and move in close enough to kick its opponent in the head, knocking the continuous stream of electricity skyward.  Genosect's attack breaks off a piece of the ceiling, so Lucario jumps up and kicks it away to prevent it from hitting Futachimaru.  Genosect uses this chance to attack, knocking both of Arata's pokemon down to the ground.  Despite being hopelessly outclassed, Arata and his pokemon do not back down.

Suddenly, the ceiling that Genosect's attack had blown a hole in earlier begins to collapse.  Dr. Zeno begins to laugh triumphantly because, in his mind, Genosect has finally achieved perfection!  As Arata mentions that this isn't really the time to be patting himself on the back like that, Dr. Zeno tells him that it doesn't matter if he lives or dies because Genosect will carry on his legacy for him.  A gas pipe explodes above, sending a massive fireball headed towards Dr. Zeno!  Genosect rushes in to shield him from damage, astonishing its creator.  Arata has Futachimaru use its Water Gun attack to put out the fire as Dr. Zeno guesses that Genosect actually developed a heart after analyzing both Arata and his pokemon.

Arata tells the doctor that he'll help the two of them escape the laboratory.  He has Genosect scan the walls for a weak point so he can order Futachimaru to use Shell Blade and Lucario to use Aura Bomb on it.  Once those attacks begin, Genosect also joins in with its Techno Buster technique.  The combined power of all three pokemon is able to create an exit that Arata and the others use to escape.

Once outside, Dr. Zeno tells Arata that if he takes Genosect with him, he's sure he'll be able to raise it to its full potential.  At this moment, Arata decides to ask Dr. Zeno if he remembers anything from his days in the Plasma-Dan about any of the legendary pokemon they were after.  He says that there is a pokemon named Black Kyurem that they were able to catch some time ago.  Arata says that *this* is the legendary pokemon he was meant to go after and announces that he'll go to the Plasma-Dan's headquarters to find it!

In a cave located in a canyon in the Isshu Region known simply as "Giant Hole," the legendary pokemon Kyurem and Zekrom stare each other down.  Below, members of the Plasma-Dan have gathered to watch the two become one.  The two legendary beasts let out terrific roars before being engulfed in light and then emerging as one creature - Black Kyurem!  The Plasma-Dan members cheer as they believe this newly created pokemon will be the key to them taking over the world.  A terrific ice attack from Black Kyurem tells them otherwise.

Outside, Arata and his Futachimaru look down and see large shards of ice jutting out of the forest in the canyon.  A short time later, the two Plasma-Dan grunts Arata had had several run-ins with before come crawling out of the Giant Hole.  Arata overhears them talk about how Black Kyurem came to be and how their organization had hoped to use its power for their own goals but that it now seems they're not able to control its power.  At that moment Black Kyurem bursts out of the canyon, shattering the ice shards around it and sending the Plasma-Dan grunts running.  Arata stands his ground.

The young trainer tries asking Black Kyurem to stop its rampage but only gets an angry roar back at him.  Arata decides that a battle is the only way to calm it down and calls out his Genosect to help him out.  Arata's pokemon, who's now equipped with the Blaze Cassette, is ordered to use Techno Buster.  The Fire-Type attack connects with the Ice-Type Black Kyurem head-on, but the legendary pokemon is eventually able to bat it away with an even more powerful ice attack.  It then fires back with Freeze Bolt, a large boulder made of ice that is able to paralyze whoever it comes into contact with!  The attack hits Genosect, preventing it from attacking any more.

Arata worries that dragging this fight out is too dangerous and calls out his Lucario to finish things up.  Lucario uses the ice pillars that are continuing to spring up from the ground to propel itself forward and deliver a devastating punch to Black Kyurem's face.  Black Kyurem is knocked back a bit but is able to recover as if nothing happened.  It then wills the tubes on its back to connect to its tail, enabling it to launch an even larger boulder of ice than it did before!  When the dust from the impact clears, Arata sees that both Lucario and Genosect are now frozen inside giant pillars of ice.

Futachimaru is sent out to break its teammates from their prisons but is only able to chip away at the thick walls of ice.  Black Kyurem ignores this and lets out another roar, causing even more ice shards to spring up all over the place.  As he looks around at sees the area around him being turned to ice, Arata realizes that the entire Isshu region will be in danger if he doesn't stop it soon.  He also realizes that there's no way he can beat it the way he is now.  Still, Arata refuses to give up.  He picks up a broken icicle and starts to chip away at his pokemon's prison in an effort to free them.  His pokemon look on and are so moved by his determination that they decide not to give up either.

Arata prepares for one final attack.  As Futachimaru charges toward Black Kyurem, Genosect and Lucario gather all their strength and burst out of their prisons.  Futachimaru continues forward, evolving into Daikenki along the way and attacking Black Kyurem with a powerful Shell Blade attack.  Genosect and Lucario are about to join in but see that there's no need; Black Kyurem's fusion is breaking apart!  A shocked Arata and Daikenki look on as Black Kyurem separates back into two separate pokemon.  Once the legendary pokemon get their bearings, Zekrom and Kyurem acknowledge Arata and then head for the sky.  Arata watches as the two disappear.

Now that he's met the legendary pokemon he had been looking after, Arata and his pokemon - Daikenki, Genosect, and Lucario - decide to set out on a new adventure!

The End.
