Of course, Pocket Monsters isn't the only anime to air on TV in an edited form.  Ever since Chris Psaros started writing Episode Comparisons for his DBZ Uncensored site, websites all over the Internet have started documenting the changes made to various anime series.  Nowadays, just about every anime that's appeared on TV has had edit lists compiled for them, so it's all just a matter of finding them.  That's where this page comes in.  The following sites tell you what's missing in the broadcast version of your favorite anime:


Like the anime that airs on Cartoon Network's Toonami and Adult Swim blocks?  Then check out Kyle Pope's Edit List on the Anime News Network site.  The column deals with strictly the censors/cuts of each series and doesn't get bogged down by cultural changes or voice actor critiques that the other sites get into.  Currently, there are edits lists for (deep breath):  The Animatrix, The Big O (both the Tooanami and the Adult Swim runs), Blue Gender, Blue Submarine #6, Cowboy Bebop, Crest of the Stars, Dai-Guard (from Toonami's Giant Robot Week), Dual:  Parallel Trouble AdventureFLCL, Ghost in the Shell:  Stand Alone Complex, Gundam 08th MS Team, Gundam 0083, Heat Guy J, Inu-Yasha, Martian Hunter Nadesico (from Toonami's Giant Robot Week), Neon Genesis Evangelion (from Toonami's Giant Robot Week), Outlaw Star, Pilot Candidate, the Read or Die OVA, Rurouni Kenshin, the Sailor Moon movies, most of the Tenchi series, Trigun, Witch Hunter Robin, and the Toonami run of Yu Yu Hakusho

The Animé No Editing Zone compares the VHS/DVD/TV versions of an anime to the original Japanese version.  Not only does it give general ideas of what's edited out of the TV versions of many shows, it also tells fans what's missing/altered in the uncut VHS/DVD versions (such as using the wrong ending theme, using English overlays, replacing sound effects, omitting episodes, etc.).  So if you want to know, for example, if the first Lupin III TV DVD has all the episodes it's supposed to, then this is the site to check.

Cardcaptors Uncensored is pretty self-explanatory.  The site's closed down now (you'll have to click on "Old Content" to view the comparisons), but they did manage to get most of the series compared, so the site remains a good source of information about one of the most universally hated dubs in the U.S.

If you go under the section labeled "Sessions" on "The Jazz Messengers" website, you'll see a list of edits done to the Adult Swim version of Cowboy Bebop.  It pretty much has the same information as Kyle Pope's list, but this site also has lots of mp3's, lists of references made in each episode, and other neat info.  Plus, I really like the layout. 

Dragon Ball Uncensored--not as good as the others (the site is more like notes than write-ups) but still infomative.  Includes comparisons of both the 1995 dub and the Toonami 2001 dub.  The site hasn't been updated in a while, making me think that it might have been abandoned. 

For the King Piccolo and Piccolo Jr. sagas of Dragon Ball, edit lists have been posted by Vekou over on the Toonzone message boards.

The DBZ Otaku Alliance has a number of comparisons for some of the later episodes of Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT, and each of the movies.  While the page has nothing on the Chris Psaros' comparisons, they're still a good source of information for those who want to find out what's missing in the TV broadcast.

DBZ Uncensored is the most popular comparison site that started it all!  It's closed down now, but if you thumb through the pages Chris left up, you'll see some well-written comparisons and will see why so many people have copied him over the years.

The Toonzone message boards have edit lists for the final fifteen episodes of Dragon Ball Z, which aired in the Spring of 2003.  In addition, the two television specials and Movies Five and Six have edit lists for them as well.  All lists are posted by Vekou.

A Comprehensive Look:  Escaflowne looks at the Fox Kids version of The Vision of Escaflowne.  For those of you who actually remember the serie's short nine-episode run on Fox Kids, these comparisons will show you WHY Escaflowne had to be yanked due to poor ratings.

The Real Outlaw Star has a detailed look at most of the Outlaw Star episodes and goes into more depth than Kyle Pope's lists by going through each and every dialogue edit as well as showing screenshots from footage that was either removed or painted over. 

Ultimate Pokemon Anime is the other site with Pocket Monsters episode comparisons.  They're no longer updated, but the site has some nice information for one to peruse through.

Sailor Moon Uncensored--A tribute to DBZ Uncensored.  They have comparisons for every Sailor Moon S and Super S epidode, and they're working their way through the Classic season. 

Yu-Gi-Oh Uncensored, like the other "Uncensored" sites, compares the English version of Yu-Gi-Oh to the Japanese one.  Find out all the cuts, paint, and other changes made to create the English version of many kids' favorite show.
